The ferry to Arran would be a very good idea for your children. It involves train from Glasgow Central station (50 minutes)followed by the boat journey (55 minutes). There are beaches and putting greens to amuse them when you get to Brodick.

If you're planning to make it all the way to Oban, you can catch a ferry and visit Tobermory in Mull, where BBC's children programme Balamory was shot. Not sure if your kids are into PC Plum et al, but pastel coloured houses look great. (We planned the trip or our toddlers but haven't had a chance to do it actually.)

My teenage sons and I spent 14 days in Scotland last June. WE stayed two nights at a lovely B&B in Dumfries and then spent a week in a self catering cottage in Westerlix.

The high points for the boys were the castles, Stirling, Linlithgow, Claeverlock Castle and their favorite Scone Palace,www.scone-palace.co.uk, outside of Perth. North & West of Glasgow, you will find the Blair Drummond Adventure Park, www.blairdrummond.com.

Indeed, taking the train tours along the west coast would be anexcellent way for everyone to see the country. Scotrail offers some nice daytrip packages, http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/c...0000068&ms=sub.

That shoudl be a good starting place. We loved our self catering cottage. It was a grat place for the boys to unwind and kick back. The only issue I had was that "centrally located" turned out to be a huge misnomer, leaving us with long days of driving to see different areas.
