Travelling from Rome to Domanico: need advice

We will be travelling to Rome in early January. We would like to find our family roots by visiting Domanico and Carolei. We plan on taking the train from Rome to Cosenza. Does any one have any advice as to how we can get from Cosenza to Domanico and Carolei? Driving ourselves is out of the question. Is it possible to get a taxi or hire a car service in Cosenza? Any ideas on the cost? Thanks for any help.

bettyjane, since these are short distances, perhaps your hotel or where you are staying in Cosenza can give you the name of a driver or taxi service.

I can't imagine that costs would be too high, if there is someone available, because these aren't long distances.

Are you absolutely sure you can't drive yourselves? A one or two day rental would probably be enough. Those are pretty tiny places.

There seems to be bus service from Cosenza.

Usually in rural areas, buses do not run on Sundays. I would think you could get a taxi from Cosenza, but perhaps not on the return unless you arranged it in advance.

Wikipedia says that the population of Domanico is 983 people. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Calabria (I'm not, but hoping to go for the same reasons), but I will presume to suggest that it might be very important to check when the church or town hall might be open.

Here's the Carolei town website. You might be able to find contact information there.

I'm guessing one or the other of you speaks Italian. If not, I think hiring a driver/guide will make it much easier to find family roots.

Good luck. I'll be following your trip if you post on it.
