Travelling from Italy to Amalfi coast
Hi,
My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy in August. We are in Rome from 5 August to 10 August. We are wondering if we can squeeze in a trip to Amalfi Coast so that we stay in Rome from 5-8 August and then go to Amalfi Coast on 8 and return on 9th. Our return flight is from Rome on 10th morning. Is this advisable? How long is the travel from Rome to Amalfi and what is the best mode of transportation? Thanks! |
Rome dp by train 7.39 - Salerno ar 10.30, dp by bus 11.00 - Amalfi ar 12.15
Rome dp by train 8.45 - Salerno ar 11.28, dp by bus 12.15 - Amalfi ar 13.30 Amalfi dp 16.00 - Salerno 17.15/17.39 - Rome ar 20.15 Amalfi dp 19.00 - Salerno 20.15/20.38 - Rome ar 23.40 |
It's possible - but its a very long trip and you are taking time away from your limited time in Rome.

It is feasible but won't allow for time to see and appreciate either Rome or Amalfi Coast. About the only situation where I would recommend it is if you have been to Rome before.
|
Where will you be before Rome? Perhaps you can squeeze it in before arriving Rome so you won't be traveling your last two days.
You could take the train to Salerno, bus to Amalfi and spend the night. Perhaps bus to Positano the next morning, ferry to Sorrento or Naples and train back Rome I've taken a quick trip (2 nights) when staying in Rome before, but I was returning to the same hotel in Rome and they agreed to store my luggage for me so I only took a backpack with me. |
I'll say save the AC for another visit. We have just got to Salerno after 2 weeks on the coast. You need to allow plenty of time for travel by SITA bus given its peak tourist season when you arrive and also time to wander around, browse and soak in the atmosphere, sit, relax and savour lunch at a restaurant with a view.
Rome is a beautiful city with so much to offer and explore - enjoy!! |

How and at what time do you arrive in Rome? With the limited info you have provided I would tend to agree that going to the AC for one night in August is not a great idea. But if you really want to (it IS among the most beautiful places I've ever been) then I'd try to do it first and the Rome so you don't have two different hotel check-ins in Rome. In other words, do AC on Aug 5-6 and then Rome Aug 7,8,9. |
Thanks a lot everyone. Our itinerary in Italy is Venice - Pisa - Rome. From whatever we have read, it seems AC is closest Rome, of these three places.
