Travelling about from Pfronten
 

Hi All,

I will be at Munich, Germany on 23rd or 24th Sept. to 9th October. Please advise me if I should buy Eurail Pass for mutiples trip travelling from Pfronten(where I will be putting up for 10days) to Austria, Czech Republic and Italy. What kind of pass should I purchase?

I would like to know how long will it takes to cover the whole of Germany.

By the way, what is the size of Germany compare to Singapore. What is the fastest and cheapest transports to use to move around Germany and between Pfronten and Austria/Czech Republic

I will be travelling to Italy from Pfronten on10th Oct. What is the cheapest and fastest transport mode. Any cheap hotels in Italy to recomend?

My interest is sight seeing and relaxing. Any suggestions how I should plan my trip?Thanks in advance.

Even if you had a couple of months you wouldn't cover everything Germany had to offer. It is much, much bigger than Singapore - Germany is 357,000 km2, while Singapore is only 778km2. So you wouldn't be able to cover the whole of Germany, especially in the limited time you have. I would say, pick an area and a few towns or cities and stick to that. Luckily Pfronten is in the Allgäu and there are some pretty parts nearby, although I am probably not the person to advise you on them. I do know Fuessen and Reutte are near to Pfronten and are worth visiting.

What do you suggest on budgeted transport mode to move around and reasonable price food for consumption.

Can you advise me which train station is nearest to Pension-Haus Ringmann hotel?

I mean the name of the train station in Pfronten. I need to know which train station should I pick at Munich airport. As I viewed from the Ausserfern Railway there are 3 station at Munich.

I don't know Pfronten - but I've just checked the address of your pension (Michael-Babel-Str 3.), and plugged the address into the timetable search function on the German railways website (www.bahn.de) (select the UK/Ireland flag for English). It looks like it's in Pfronten-Steinach. I checked this address on Google Maps and it looks like this is indeed the case. Hope that helps.

Many thanks to you as I have tried all ways to source but couldn't find any clue from anywhere. Wonder if it is a walking distance from the train station to the hotel... :)

Go to Google Maps and when the search window comes up, type in the address of the pension. It will bring up the location of the pension, and there is also a small icon with a picture of a train marking the stations. I think that would help you a lot.

Um, where in Italy are you going on Oct 10? - that makes a major difference.

I have looked at the train schedules and from your location would be a 9 to 10 hour trip to Milan - with multiple changes - and about 3 hours more to get to Rome.

Don't know exactly where this place is but you should probably consider some sort of budget airline unless you have the whole day to spend on the train.

If basing in Pfonten and doing day trips no pass will be useful to you except perhaps the Bavarian Pass that you can buy at the local train station and it also covers many buses - you just cannot hop on the fastest express trains - check out these sites for great dope on German trains - www.bahn.de - official site of German Railways for schedules - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com. But forget any notion of a Eurailpass if just doing day trips from one German town - if doing a lot of trips the the lower-cost German Railpass may come into play - the more days you travel the pass becomes really cheap.

From Pfronten practical day trips go to Salzburg, Austria, one of Europe's most beautiful cities - a Baroque wonder and yes to Fuessen and Mad Ludwig's Neuschwanstein Castle - Mad Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee Castle, the 'Bavarina Versailles' lovingly set on an island in the middle of the placid Chiemsee; Munich itself, Dachau concentration camp memorial and neat romantic old towns like Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen from where you can hop a train to ascend Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze and also Innsburck in Austria as well.

Thanks for the advice. I just got back from my Germany trip 10days ago.

The place that I went was very near to the Bavarian Alps. It is a holiday village whereby bus service stops operating as early as 14:00hr on weekends and 16:00hr on weekdays. The best and most convenient transport mode is train. The place where I put up was between these two train station i.e Pfronten Reid (20mins walking) and Pfronten Steinach(15mins). Trains and buses are more regular at Pfronten Reid.

It is more worthwhile to use the bayern tickets(bavarian pass) and was indeed very reasonable and much cheaper for group of not more than 5pacs to travel together.

Anyway, PalenQ I did not get to see your message until today as I was on my way there and I regretted buying 6 days Eurailpass for selected countries once touched down at Munich airport. The De-banh counter staff at the airport was very unfriendly when I asked him for advise. He told me off by saying I should have done my homework before going. I told him that this was a last min trip and seek for his advise. I wanted to cancel the Eurailpass next day but I can't as he already activated my pass. sigh... :(

Anyway, I have an enjoyable trip and I am planning for a Europe trip again...

Advise to those who is thinking of buying any pass. It is more worthwhile if you buy the global then the selected countries for 6 days and best if purchase the unlimited usage pass.
