Traveling with Medications
 

As I understand it, there are no TSA restrictions on "pill-type" (non-gel)prescription meds? I was planning to carry on a week's supply in one of those pill organizer things and put the actual pharmacy bottles in my checked luggage.

I don't think you are likely to be challenged regarding prescription type pills. For myself, I would want to keep enough pills with me for my entire trip.

Just got off a flight from Glasgow to LA and they wanted to see the actual pill bottle with prescription for all our meds. They also wanted to know why I needed Motrin but let me take it on. None of our pills were either gel or liquid, but from UK to US they are being very, very careful - which was fine with us.

Even before the current heightened security I always advised my patients to carry, not pack and check prescription medications. There are too many what-if's - like what if your checked bag gets lost, etc. For OTC or supplements than can be fairly easily replaced, go ahead and pack, but know that some diligent TSA agent may question (and make you discard) any kind of pills outside bottles.

Seamus, my doctor always gave us the same advise also. Any prescription medicines should be in the pharmacy container and in our carryon of course.
So many travellers say they don't do that and that they have never had a problem. But the few times I had prescription drugs I followed my doctors advise (he was a world traveller btw). I would think now more than ever that would be most prudent and necessary thing to do.

Thank you; I will follow your advice. I have always carried the prescription bottles with me, but after several trips of never needing to show them, figured I'd omit them next trip. This is obviously not the time to take chances. I needed the soapbox talk!
