Brilliant explanation! I always wonder why all be basics of how a computer works have to be hidden from the right-brained. They actually never care to dissect their macs, if they did, maybe they'd realize how backward it is.

Oh, Robbes, you devil, you. . . . Perhaps you should add "anal" to your WinTel list.

And have I said that my Dad's better than your Dad?

Oh, and since my Mac runs Windows and the amazing OSX 10.4 (both of which appeal to me), I guess that makes me full brained.

Now, the question is, will the Windows folks take the bait I've just put down?

Once again, I'll say it: Maybe we should talk about European travel once and a while.

And I now I will step out of this "discussion" to look for information about Croatia. . .

OSX is Unix. WinTels have been running Unix for twenty years. Welcome to the XXI century, Mr. Jobs.

No one has yet found a reason to run Mac applications on a WinTel, or an emulator would have been built into Windows by now.

Sure . OSX 10.4.x is just a crippled BSD. It uses wintel hardware, with crippled firmware/drivers, the aim is to make it impsossible for standard hardware to be used. It's freaky! They use the same hardware, modify the firmware (software) of that hardware to be only compatible with OSX. Then it's sold for 3 times the market price. To make their customers happy they also hide all the settings from them and only let them see the basics. So the customer actually believes it's that simple and that he can handle everything. You can't break things you don't see, can you?. As a result theose people believe to be computer literate, when the can only find the power switch. A brilliant strategy from Apple!

You'll find out how crazy all this is, when you look at the OSX86 pages. There left-brained people demonstrate, how you have to patch OSX to make it work on most standard PCs. And yes it works, because it's just a primitive BSD with some pretty icons!!

Just got a new Sony Vaio Notebook, it weighs less than 2 lbs, and is much smaller than a sheet of paper. This is ideal for me, as I can use it on the plane to watch TV SHOWS/movies/Ipod tunes/Meditation Tapes, and then use it in the apts in Europe, without feeling left out of whats goiing on at home (I usually go for extended trips). Also great for skype Video Phone Calls (Free) back home, with the built-in video camera. It works great.

I was wondering if Korcula might be a good place to spend a couple days?

Intex - how well does the keyboard work for typing? I'll be using the computer for trip journals and want to be able to use the keyboard fairly easily.

If you can, check out the the Asus EEE PC, it's a lightweight 7 or 10 inch portable and should come out in September. It has wireless, linux or even Windows XP possible and a SD card instead of an harddrive. The basic model will be priced around $200. (Yes, you heard right)

Traveller2005:
The keyboard is a bit smaller than the usual one, but I have no problem at all, I am typing on it now. It has all the normal keys. The screen resolution is fantastic. The only drawback is the price, starting at abot $2100

Right now I'm thinking about two nights on Hvar island, then driving up to the Plitvice lakes (which Rick Steves raves about) and ending up in Zagreb. Our flight leaves Zagreb early on July 3rd for Amsterdam and then home.

Suggestions? Should I bring my Rick Steves books with me? My Garmin Nuvi 370? My Macintosh computer? My Bose Quiet Comfort II headphones? So many decisions. . .

Robbes, any thoughts?

Wow. That EEE looks like a killer. I hope they've provided a way to take off the training wheels (evidently included for the Mac market) so we can run our Michelin GPS mapping app. I really like the 2 lb weight, too - plenty portable enough to carry all of Rick Steves e-books and use them to avoid all the places he recommends (not to mention avoiding all the people who accept his advice as valuable).

I was in Zagreb for a few hours this summer but I am looking forward to getting back to explore next year. It turns out that an associate of mine at the high school I teach at has a sister that lives there. Small world!

My husband and I take ours everywhere! We take tons of digital pics and need to upload them to the computer. Many places have free wireless, so that makes communicating or looking up travel info easier.
