traveling with a baby car seat needed?

My daughter will be traveling in London with her 5 month old baby. She wonders if she needs to bring a car seat. Are they required in taxis?

My question to you would be-if you use a car seat in the states everytime you transport "precious cargo" then why would you ever travel overseas without one?

Good Question. Are they required in taxis? If so which countries? It may a rule/law similar to the non-requirement of seat belts in busses.

You just put the stroller in the taxi, no need to even fold it. I used to have a car seat with a separate frame with wheels (from make Maxi Cosi); very handy if you prefer to fasten the car seat with the seatbelt instead of leaving the baby in the buggy. For short rides in taxis in London I always left babies in the stroller. So much easier not to have to pick them up when they have fallen asleep.

If your daughter has a separate seat for the baby on the plane, the car seat would be good for baby to sleep in.

Doesn't she have the stoller with built in carseat/baby carrier? If not, she should go get one. They may not be required but why go without?

I just bought two of the Safety 1st Tote n Go Car Seats. They are very light, and can fit in a large backback or duffle. Perfect for travel and taxis. It takes a few practice installs to get it to fit properly but once you know what you're doing, you can do it in 2 minutes.

Ah wait, just noticed the baby is only 5 months old. This seat won't be good - it's only for 25-40 pounds.

the rules in the UK are changing come sept 2006. even under the new laws, a child seat is not required in taxis(assuming it is not provided) no matter the child's age.

after sept, a car seat must be used in a non-taxi car for a child under 3 years. before sept 2006, a baby need not be in a car seat (rear seat only) if there is no such seat in the car.

hope this helps.

Not only for automobile/taxi travel, but for use on aircraft as well...make sure the baby seat is certified for use on planes.

Most London taxis are equipped with a built-in child booster seat, however this is for children who are large enough to use the regular seat belts (with a boost).

I don't think the Tote n'Go would work, but it is definitely great for when the child is bigger.

At 5 mos. old, the baby should still fit in the infant seat, so she should just use that and a snap n' go. If the baby is too big for the infant car seat, get one with a higher weight and height limit. Assuming you are from the US (which may not be the case), Britax and Combi both have infant seats with higher than average limits.
