Traveling to Greece

We are traveling to Greece in June. We will be spending several days on Rhodes and would like suggestions on where to stay. We will be traveling with 3 children ages 9,10&18. We would also like suggestions on what to do/see to maximize our time while there. (We leave on a sailing 8 day sailing trip) And do you suggest going to Turkey for one day or staying on the island?

We have exhausted ourselves looking at all the options and would love input from those who have been there.

We've visited Rhodes during the last two summers with our teenage kids. The first visit, we stayed on the beach in Faliraki, which is like a Greek Las Vegas without Celine Dion. The hotel, an all-inclusive, catered to large package tours from the UK and Eastern Europe. The beach was only OK, and needless to say, this really wasn't our favorite spot.

But we did love our visit to the Old Town in Rhodes and Lindos. So much so, that we decided to go back last summer and stay in the New Town, very close to one of the main gates of the old walled city.

We stayed at Rodos Park, a city hotel, that is very luxurious. It has lovely guest rooms, and a medium-sized pool surrounded by a garden. Best of all, it's within easy walking distance of one of the main gates of the Old Town, as well as a long strand of public beach in the New Town.

You asked about going to Turkey for a day. I don't think it's worth it. The hydrofoil from Rhodes goes to Marmaris, which is one of the tackiest places we visited during our entire three-week stay last summer in Turkey. There's nothing remotely charming or particularly Turkish about it. Save your trip for when you have more time. Istanbul alone is worth several days- it's absolutely one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities on earth!

I would advise against Turkey. You're in Greece which, in my opinion is so much more interesting and beautiful.

The Lindos excursion is well worth it and the kids should enjoy the donkey rides. I would also recommend taking a ferry and making a day trip to one of the smaller, near by islands for a taste of simpler Greek life and uncrowded beaches. Any island! Which ever is fastest to get to.

There's also a butterfly farm that your younger kids might really enjoy.

I would discourage people from visits to the butterfly (moth) valley, because it damages the butterflies... the guides and tour groups clap to get the poor things panicked and fly up; it interferes with their process of surviving, eating, and mating and reproducing. All for a few cheap thrills for tourists.
