Traveling to/from Cinqua Terre

We plan on traveling from Florence to Cinque Terre to Venice. Has anyone gone this route before? I know it is a little out of the way to go to Cinque Terre but we really want to go! Are there trains that go directly there and then to Venice or do we have to connect? I have looked at Trenitalia but haven't been able to answer my own questions. Also, is one of the five towns better to stay in than the others?

Hi. We were in Cinque Terre last summer. The main train 'hub' (one of the two) for Cinque Terre is La Spezia. So, after staying in Manarola for 5 nights, we took a train from there to La Spezia (takes less than 15 minutes) and then from La Spezia we took the train to Firenze. You should have no problem doing the opposit. Maybe with the La Spezia info. you can now look into trains to Venice. The other 'train hub' for Cinque Terre may be Genoa I believe, but check this board to be sure as I am not.
As for which town, we enjoyed our stay in Manarola...it's one of the quieter of the five and that was why we enjoyed it. Riomaggiore and Corniglia are also smaller...if you will be using the trains daily I am not sure you would want to hike up the stairs daily to Corniglia even though it is lovely.
Vernazza and Monterosso are both nice as well, but different in that they are busier and bigger...Monterosso is certainly quite a beach resort, making it quite unlike the othe cinque terre towns.
Search this board to read about people's opinions...that was how we ultimately decided.
cheers,
CC

Bonjoro. We took the train. No problem. Just print out the schedule before you go. Very very easy. We went to all 5 towns and stayed in Vernazza and LOVED it. Well, okay, we loved all the towns. We used Rick Steve's book as a starter guide. We really liked the Trattoria Gianni to stay at. You cannot go wrong. Why not Go in or out of Genoa or Milan and go down to Cinque Terra- then go to Florence and then to Venice and leave from then. Sounds like you are criss-crossing. After our flight from us to Milan we trained to Santa Margherita Ligure and spent two nights before 5terra and loved it. Great web site 5terre of 5terra. .com or .it. Enjoy. Caio.
