traveling the basque country

Help planning trip to french basque country from rome: We are a family of four with two children ages 8 and 11. We will be in Rome in March and would like to go to the french basque country for approx. four days. What is the best way to get there from Rome and what are the must see's in the basque region. We have ancestors from St. Jean pied de Port and Osses, but would also like to see Biarritz. Any suggestions?

Lots of good information in Maribel's Guide to the Pays Basque:

Plan a half-day to tour the old city and walk the walls of the castle/fortress in St. Jean Pied de Port. We had a grand time there last summer.

to Nikki and Julie49: We will be in Rome, what is the best airport to fly into to tour the Pays BAsque?

Biarritz and Pau are the closest airports to St. Jean Pied de Port. I have no idea whether either has flights from Rome. Actually, check Tarbes as well as they do flights for people wanting to go to Lourdes.

Failing thoseairports, there's also Bordeaux or Toulouse. Toulouse would be about 3 /12 hours' drive to St. Jean.

www.mappy.fr is a good planning tool.
