Traveling the Amalfi Coast
What mode of transportation would you recommend for traveling along the Amalfi Coast and would you go all the way down to Salerno or stop before that point?

dcappolino - Your choice will vary greatly depending on your comfort level with driving in Italy and on narrow windy roads with a cliff on one side too...also how far you explore depends largely on how much time you're planning to spend in the area, and if you've been to the Amalfi Coast before. For a first trip, I'd homebase in Sorrento, and explore Sorrento, Capri, Positano, Amalfi & Ravello. If you're interested in ruins then you'll probably want to do side trips to Pompeii and Paestum. If you have more time, you can cover more ground and continue southward. If you have lots of time and do want to do more southern towns & sites, then staying somewhere in the middle might be a better choice. Tell us more about what you want to see & how much time you'll be spending there. Trish

Back to the question on mode of transport...
Best choice when available is ferry (not hydrofoil): most scenic, roomy, bathroom friendly, and sometimes fastest. But schedules can be flakey due to season or weather, and sometimes the port is inconvenient.
Next best choice is train and bus. Some hire limos at extravagant cost which almost rivals the helicopter charter costs (avail to Capri and Positano).
Worst is private car - trouble for you and a public nuisance for everyone else.
Salerno isn't at all an attraction, but a place you may go thru on way to one such as the highly recommended Paestum.

Ok. Three days is enought for a taste, and to convince you that a return trip is necessary. In the three days, does this include half days dedicated to travel to and from Rome or elsewhere? If I were you, I'd make a list of the things that interest you and then start prioritizing and eliminating stuff from there. Pompeii is great, but you probably could save the Naples museum for your next trip when you have more time. I'd take the trains to get to Sorrento and then the bus to get around between towns on the coast. What time of year will you be there? If "in season" crowded nature of this area will eat into your time even more. Pompeii is at least half a day, and you probably want to do that either the first or last day. Capri could be a whole day, depending on what you do there. You could do half a day each in Positano & Amalfi and save Ravello, Paestum for next time. You can do Mornings & evenings in Sorrento. IMHO, quality is better than quantity when it comes to exploring these areas. Good luck...there's lots of people on here with good info to share about this area! Trish
