Traveling out of the US with children that are not mine
 

I have searched all over the Dept. of State travel info website and can't find an answer to this.

I'm planning a trip with my 2 nephews (ages 15 & 17) to either Thailand or France. Since they are not my children, I'm thinking I will probably need some special documentation from their parents stating it's OK for them to be with me?

Last summer we drove to Montreal and almost weren't allowed into Canada because we didn't have a note from their parents. Were also questionsed by US immigration on the way back.

Does anyone have any experience with this or know where I can get information about what is needed? Thanks.

You need a notarized letter signed by both parents giving permission for you to take the boys to wherever it is you're taking them. Be specific about places and dates. You will also need an emergency medical release giving permission for you to authorize any medical care which may be necessary while they are in your care.

There are many discussions, if you search. I remember you need a notarized permission from both parents to take the children out of the country, children's passports and permission from parents to seek medical help in case of emergency.

Be sure to have notarized permission to obtain medical treatment. I had this when my nephews were staying with us. Good thing, because I had to bring one of them to the doctor, and he wouldn't treat without written permission.
