Alice, your question was answered (look at the responses from Granmere and Cricket) but you did say "Cheese is not an issue to a pregnnt woman, not even blue cheeses that are crowded with mould. " If you do not know something then don't make an offhand comment.

Cheeses made from unpasteurized milk do present a known risk of listeriosis and consequent fetal loss. But listeria outbreaks have also been associated with various processed foods such as deli meats in the U.S., so in the end there is no guarantee of avoiding it anywhere.

Never mind about peeling your fruit and the water---at least as safe as what you're used to getting at home.

WOW!!!! all of this and a little information(?) too...sounds like the second act of an opera. I think while everyone is trying to be helpful a lot of subjectivity got in the way. I would advise the original poster to check with the physician AT HOME and go with that advice.

My wife and I have travelled in Italy while she was 6 months pregnant and since then with our little girl. The US conulates' website provides a list of English speaking physicians, their location, phone number and their area of practice. We brought the list and actually used it when our daughter was sick in Florence...a great resource to have! the Doctor actualy came to us 45 Min after we called for just a small rash! My wife never fealt better during her pregnancy than while we were in Italy..Enjoy!
