Traveling in Europe before a study visa in Italy

My son will be studying in Rome for the fall semester in 2015. Do you know, can he fly to France 6 weeks before the semester begins and then travel from France to Rome for the beginning of the semester? Or must he fly to the UK and then back to Rome? I can't find anyone who knows the answer to this. Thank you!!!!!!

Your son lives in the U.K. I gather (but not sure) - is it a Visa question or Schengen question or what? for any definitive answer call the Italian Consulate in London or the U.S.

We live in the US -- and the visa question seems to be connected to the Schengen question. Can he be in France for 6 weeks before going to Italy when his student visa begins? Or, is being in a Schengen country for 6 weeks before he goes to Italy problematic? The Consulate has not been able to give me a straight answer and I have to buy the ticket before the student visa is sent in.
