Traveling from Malaga to Gibraltar using public transport

Will be in Malaga for a few days, have been to Andalusia and seen the main sights, would like to visit Gibraltar as a day trip and need to return to Malaga the same day, is this doable using public transport?

Thanks.

You'll have to take the Portillo Bus from Malaga Bus Station to La Línea, and then walk 10 mins to the Gibraltar limit.
Timetables here: http://www.ctsa-portillo.com/ima/pdf...a-estacion.pdf
Be sure to book a DIRECT bus. Otherwise it'll be stopping in many places.

Hmmmm....what exactly does an auto transport company have to do with the OP's question on how to get from Malaga to Gibralter using public transportation?

chapla Jan 7th, 2010 07:22 PM

I don't understand what CathyM is questioning!Josele gave great bus info and suggestion to take a direct bus otherwise you'll have the bus meandering all over Malaga before it hits the highway.
Gibraltar is a fun day trip -watch out for those monkeys roaming free and the caves. It's also so easy to walk across the border instead of waiting in line with a car!
We took the hovercraft over to Africa that same day from Gibraltar-I don't recommend it!If the day is clear you can see the coastline of Africa from lookouts in Gibraltar.

chapla-
I was not questioning josele - his information was right on the mark. There was a post (that has been removed probably since I reported it as suspiciously an advertisement) from someone that posted a link to a company that shipped autos and household goods to and from Spain. This had nothing to do with the OP's question. Didn't mean to offend.

Thank you for feedback.

CathyM was responding to a advertising post that post has been removed.

I have travelled to Morocco by ferry when I was in Southern Spain a few years ago. Definitely won't be doing this, I plan on roaming around Gibraltar and heading back to Malaga. chapla, did you get an official passport stamp when you arrived in Gibraltar?

I need to jump in here and give a BIG THANK YOU! to josele. I used his/her suggestions before leaving for Malaga and was not disappointed! Right on target...loved El Pimpi! and many others! Great advice! Malaga was one of our favorite cities.

And due to Spanish opposition to Britain's continuing occupation of what Spaniards perceive as Spanish territory - the Rock -Spanish authorities do not allow buses to go further than La Linea - unless this has changed recently - i got off the bus in La Linea and then had to walk thru frontier and then right across the tarmac of Gibraltar's airportto reach the town. A unique entrance to any city, crossing the runways of an airport.

Hi Fodorites,
This thread is a few years old. Does anyone have recent info on travel from Malaga to La Linea (Gibraltar)? From what I could tell from the link, the bus takes around 3 hours in each direction. Does this sound right? Thanks.

Yes, a slow service. http://www.venta.avanzabus.com/compra/busqueda.jsp
No other public transport options. No trains. Fastest is to rent a car, and it will take about 90 min on toll autopista AP-7 to drive 130 km to La Linea.

If it's a day trip, the only viable option is to hire a car and hope that the Spanish authorities aren't being a PIA at the border. Public transport would take forever. You could take the train to Fuengirola and bus from there, but it's still a protracted journey and then you've got to come back.

Do bus travelers still have to walk across the airport runway to get into Gibraltar town - was a weird experience - Spain I guess will not less buses into what they consider their possession. Can drivers drive in or must or should they park on the Spanish side and walk in?

Be sure to climb up om the Rock to see the famous tail-less apes -beware they can snatch things-little pests it seemed - looking for handouts.

Great views from up top of course.
