If you're not looking for a hot meal, most any bakery offers excellent sandwiches.

Hi All,

Actually, mdellar, for a student's budget, I think you don't need a cafe at all! Just find a grocery store (in Vevey there are two between the train station and the lake, and in Montreux there's a HUGE grocery store inside the Forum at the lake). Buy cheese, bread, ham, wine, chocolate, water & yogurt for about 20 chf. Then plop down on a bench or on the grass and gaze over the lake to the mountains beyond. You've just saved about 50 chf!

Or, get a slice of pizza from a vendor or find a pizza cafe -- I found these to be the cheapest.

suze -- I'm one who has Villeneuve on the agenda! I've decided to stay there for my next trip to the area (may be Sept 05 or maybe June 06). I just love its website -- a square, lots of old buildings, lots of restaurants. I'm hoping it will be like Morges but without the park and the castle -- but I mean like Morges as in a small, quaint community. And it's only 2 km from my old school! Right now I'm liking the 4-star Hotel Les Marines even though it's rather modern. There's also the 3-star Hotel Port in town. If I beat you there, I'll be sure to write about the hotels -- if YOU beat me there, you had better write about the hotels!!

Have a wonderful time, mdellar. Eat one of those pain du chocolate things for moi. (Flakey pasterie with large chocolate chips inside?)

Glad to see you're still planning, S'. J.

If you plan to picnic, there is also a middle-sized Migro supermarket in the airport railway station. You can buy bread, drinks, hams, etc there before boarding your train. Get Swiss francs first.

jmw44, that's le pain AU chocolat

Swandav- it's a deal (re Villeneuve)!

Kappa- good suggestion! and that Migro at the airport train station is also good for breaking larger bills (I needed coins for the pay phone and only had a 100CHF note). there's also a public bathroom nearby.

Au, thanks, kappa. p.s. There should be a period after "etc" Smiley face.

If I sound snippy, it's because I've just spent 45 minutes searching for three items at Albertsons. They've changed the shelf arrangements yet again.
