Traveling from Capri to Pompeii Ruins
Hi there,
My wife and I are staying in Capri for a few days and would like to take a day trip to Pompeii for a day. What would be the easiest route? Should we go to Sorrento or Naples to catch the train to Pompeii and also, what Train stop should we get off at in Pompeii? |
I would go to Sorrento as it's less crowded. There's a shuttle bus to the train station from the port (about 1€). I would also book a return ferry ticket as ferries don't run late and you don't want to get stuck on the mainland.

Slightly fewer crossings from Capri to Sorrento than to Naples - they change over the season, so don't take these as being definite, but something like:
Hydrofoils: CAPRI - NAPOLI Beverello: 6.50; 8.05; 9.10; 10.35; 12.40; 13.40; 15.25; 16.30; 18.10 CAPRI - SORRENTO: 8.00 (f); 9.05; 11.20; 13.00; 15.15; 16.20; 17.40 Ships: CAPRI - NAPOLI: 05.40; 09.20; 10.20 (tv); 14.50; 15.35(tv); 20.15 (tv) CAPRI - SORRENTO: 07.00 (tv); 08.40 (tv); 13.35 (tv); 18.45 (tv) .....even so, I doubt anyone would think it worth "going the long way"? http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/132567370 Particularly as you'd almost certainly use the very same train service, from whichever end you started... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/128288647 The station you'd go to is called "Pompei Scavi" - or, sometimes, "Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri". It's on the orange line shown on this map... http://www.unicocampania.it/files/mappe/pompei.pdf For details of the bus from Sorrento's port to station, see... http://www.unicocampania.it/index.ph..._primopiano=25 Peter |
