Traveling by car. Help!!.

I am planning to rent a car in Zurich in April. Can anyone give me some advice on the best route to Lysien and also from Lysien to Smadling, Austria. I'm sure I'll need an overnight stop and would like suggestions on best route and reasonable accommodations in route.(b&b's,etc.) Also, I believe rental cars include toll stickers for SW. but since I'll be going into Austria I'll probably need to get a 10 day toll sticker there too. What is best way to obtain one for AUS.?

May I "teach a man to fish"? Check out

www.viamichelin.com
www.mappy.com
or www.shellgeostar.com

Don't try to plan a road trip without one of these. Each is subtly different.

You can buy the Austrian vignette at various highway stations, especially at the border. Pretty easy to be a scofflaw about it (unlike Switzerland) in Austria - - though it's much cheaper thah for CH (Switzerland - - Confederatio Helvetica in Latin - - the "offical" name of the country). No such "official" abbreviation as SW. Sverige (Sweden) is "S". España (Spain)is "E". Österreich (Austria) is A, but also sometimes written as AUT (Autriche, in French).

In Internet speak, there are different codes to learn

ch
se
es

and

at
for the aforementioned countries. Rex,
You sure do have a lot to say about a lot of stuff. Are you a travel guide or agent? I appreciate your input.

Rex Apr 1st, 2002 08:53 PM

I am an amateur guide. Non-commercial. I do what I do for free. I am not a travel agent. Why? Do you want to go somwhere? Galicia-to-Bretagne? Czech Republic and southern Poland? Or anywhere else?

Should I post the URL's about those trips (currently in the pipe dream stage only).
What's the deal with the toll sticker in CH?

T-Rexx Apr 1st, 2002 08:58 PM

Thanks Rex, but I don't have any money to travel right now. And, I've heard of Poland and the Czech Republic, but I don't know where those other places are.

Switzerland has no toll booths. Just a 40 CHF sticker to be allowed to be on the autobahnen (autoroutes). That's the annual cost, even if you only need it for one hour.

Galicia is in Northwestern Spain. Bretagne is in northwestern France.
george,

I cannot find "Lysien" in two of my (Swiss) map books nor on the Swiss search website (which Ursula turned me onto). Am I just clueless? Do you mean "Leysin" or "Lausanne"? Or have you found another small gem in Switzerland for us to discover?

If you mean Leysin or Lausanne, you'll need the correct spelling to use the websites that Rex cites. Otherwise, let us know more about Lysien!

s

Honestly, George, I hate to be critical, but if you don't learn to spell the names of the places you want to go, you'll never get there, with or without the maps suggested by Rex. What you want is Leysin in Switzerland (a nice little village with an American school) and Schladming in Austria (a lovely mountain resort). Get some good maps, study them, and you will quickly see what routes are best to use.

We've all seen worse mistakes. At least he didn't post this on the Austr(al)ia forum!
