Thanks RnR for your read through. It is actually quite an interesting read through--this post. After having the site up for a year, it is interesting to be able to reflect on it in this way, and to see what people thought about the idea then. I think this past year of the site has actually been quite successful.

Jackie
http://www.thelongtriphome.com

To: "SeriousWriters"

>>"Th ose of us who actually get paid to publish will never bother with such a site"

Good. Then don't. Your "serious" writing won't be missed.

>>"Serious writers, by which I mean people who know what they are talking about and can describe it in terms that capture the reader, will never post at such a site."

There are people who post on THIS website, who I would guess are not "serious" writers, who can describe sights and experiences in terms that capture this reader.

I admire good writing. But you rather fatuously seem to assume that the only people capable of good writing are those that get paid for it. Au contraire. There are plenty of talented writers, just as there are plenty of talented creative people of all types. The problem is that the market is not large enough to absorb (i.e. pay for) all this creativity and talent.

Just wanted to correct the person who warned about copyrighting your work before submitting it anywhere, etc. (see above). Under U.S. law, your creative work is automatically copyrighted as soon as it is created. It is not necessary to "copyright" it with the Copyright and Trademark Office (though you can go through the formality if it makes you feel better). So if you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and write an article, it is immediately and automatically copyrighted, and you hold all such rights. Anyone who then publishes or otherwise does anything with it without your permission is guilty of copyright infringement.

Just thought I'd throw this info out there for any aspiring writers who don't already know about it. By the way, I can vouch for Jackie's reputability; she published a photojournal of my photos last year and was very professional (and she's got a nice site!).
