Travel with Kids to Croatia Dubrovnik

My husband and I have all of September off as we transition between jobs (also have August off when we will manage logistics but want to travel in September).

We will be travelling from Atlanta. We have 2 kids (5 and 2) who are relatively good travellers (Italy with the baby lots of cross country trips)

I keep trying to squash my desires to use this great opportunity to go to Europe (cost, complexity) BUT I can't help but want to use this unique opportunity to travel more than just a hawaiian beach.

SO - now I am thinking about Dubrovnik and Croatia. Have been doing some cruising around on the board and would love perspective from anyone travelling with younger children in the area. Acceptance at restaurants and around town? Navigating streets etc. Finding some nice beaches for relaxation etc. Kids on ferries?

I would ideally be flying into Dubrovnik using that as base. side trips for night or 2 from there. We have the whole month of September and could go from 10 days to 4 weeks if we want.

Please no blasting on wisdom of children in Europe but general perspective on this destination when it comes to kids assuming that we can manage Flroence, Bologna with them fine.

We are going to Croatia with our 16 month old daughter in July for two weeks - flying into Dub. and out of Split - a couple of days in Korcula and Hvar as well. Have not been able to find much on traveling their with children but have faith that all will go well. Will post a trip report upon our return.

My husband and I are also planning a month long trip in September to Croatia with our 20 month old daughter. Haven't been able to find much info on travel tips with a toddler in Croatia. Any advice or good websites would be appreciated.

sf,

All I can say is: Boy, you are one lucky ***.

September in Dalmatia -- perfect.

Normally, with limited time (a week or less), you'd have plenty to see just using public transport (ferries to the islands, etc.) But, with a whole month...

Find yourself a good base in Dubrovnik. After a few days of jetlag recovery, rent a car and drive north out of the city. You might find a nice little cove SOBE (rental) that you want to retire for few more days. If not, just keep on going up the coastal road to Makarska and Split. You're bound to encounter a charming little place to stay for a while.

You can always take the ferries over to Korcula and Hvar.

sfmaster, It sounds like there a quite a number of us with this same questions. I'm considering a trip in late August to Croatia with my 3 kids (9,7,4). I'll be watching this thread to see if there is anyone who actually did it with tips. Last summer we did Rome, Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii, Florence, Sienna, traveling on trains, and had a wonderful time. Be sure to carve out some time for an amusement park. Rome has a big one (forget the name) on the outskirts. It is open in the evenings until about midnight (too hot during the day), but very hard to find a taxi home.

Happy trails.

Bermudacalling:

Wow that is fairly tight planning with Late August! I am sure you can make it happen but I think things could get tight.

We are going in September for 3 weeks to Croatia. 2 Days Split, 10 Days Hvar, 6 days Dubrovnik.

Look for Stilli who has posted about her recent trip with toddler. A little younger than yours.

We have decided to cut off Rome and just focus on Croatia.

I decided to use a travel agent to arrange trip given a ton of other logistics going on in life, and I wasn't geting responses from apartment owners regarding Septe, with kids I wanted some fixed places to land.

Good luck on planning.

sfmaster, Glad your trip is coming together for Croatia. My wife and kids are in Greece, so I thought Croatia would be close and interesting, but now I have some friends raving to me about Slovenia, the Julian Alps. Ah, the hard choices in life. (since we live in Bermuda, the sea in Croatia is less of a draw to us than mountains and cities). You are right, it is short time to plan. But, that's the way we always seem to do it, and it always seems to work out. The hardest thing for us is that in many places in europe, they only rent to 4 persons per room, even if the 5th is a little kid who will sleep in our bed regardless. so, it ends up that we have to rent two rooms, so even the most reasonable price, times 2, is exorbitant. Hopefully Slovenia (or Croatia) won't play that trick on us.

We did lots of travel when we had 1 little one, then 2. Always worked out fine, although as Stilli pointed out, your vacations have a different pace, and different activities, than before. 3 is getting logistically tricky, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun without them.

Enjoy your trip.
