Travel Trivia Challenge #4

Name the capital of the Hittite Empire. Hint: it has two names.

dan woodlief Jul 11th, 1999 04:44 PM

Bogazkoy or Hattusha.

Bob Brown Jul 11th, 1999 04:48 PM

I think one must arise very early, so to speak, to find something that this audience, collectively, cannot answer.
Provided, of course, that there is an answer.
catherine Jul 11th, 1999 04:53 PM

The correct spelling is Boghazkoi or Hattusa.
Al Jul 11th, 1999 05:38 PM

You are correct; Boguzkale or Hattusas.
Seeing how quickly you replied, perhaps I should come up with harder questions...or should we draw this to a merciful close? Your vote will count.

April Jul 11th, 1999 09:14 PM

Sure do more... even if I don't understand the question or the answer.
Martha B Jul 11th, 1999 09:30 PM

To make this a little less mystifying for April and others, the Hittites were an ancient people mentioned in the Bible, but otherwise unknown for centuries. Then, in the 19th century, archaeologists working on a hill (kale=hill in Turkish) near the village of Boghazkoy (koy=village in Turkish) discovered that their site could certainly be linked with Hattusas, the Hittite's legendary capitol. So, now this huge, beautiful site is known under both names.

Martha B Jul 11th, 1999 09:36 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention, the site can easily be visited on a day trip from Ankara, Turkey.

April Jul 12th, 1999 12:19 AM

Thanks, Martha. Guess I should go to Turkey one of these days.
Maira Jul 12th, 1999 03:27 AM

Al, you come up with good ones, keep them coming!

Martha B.'s sup info is pretty neat too!

Al, are you sure there are no waterfalls in continental Europe?

dan woodlief Jul 12th, 1999 04:21 AM

Actually, there are several correct spellings for the city.

Al Jul 12th, 1999 07:29 AM

Having no good grasp of spelling, I salute your answer, Dan. In Turkish are several letters which we do not have in the English alphabet. So we spell many Turkish names and words phonetically. As a result, spellings will vary.
