Travel to Sicily with Children

I am traveling this June 3 days to Messina, 2 days to Taormina and 1 day to Siracusa with my children age 6 and 9. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a kid friendly itinerary.
Thank you

Siracusa /Ortigia the old town has a lot to offer-Greek ruins with a massive amphitheater; go to a marionette puppet show, walk down by Lungamare and enjoy a gelato,go to the interesting food market, etc. It is one of my favorite places on earth!

Jeanette1313, You might also consider the EAR OF DIONYSIUS, “an artificiallimestone cave carved out of the Temenites hill in the city of Syracuse. Its name comes from its similarity in shape to the human ear."

If I recall, a person's voice reverberates inside the cave. Should be fun for children. :)

You will love Sicily...

Messina and Catania are where they make Sicily's best cannoli. So just eat your way down the coast to Siracusa. 8-)

If your kids are into science, how about taking them to a volcano: Mt. Etna? You can drive to Rifugio Sapienza on the southeast side (among other places) and pick up lava rocks, and then take a cable car another couple of thousand feet to where they have the "moon buggies" that give you guided tours of the volcano.

The puppet theatre is a magical experience for anyone of any age.

Why 3 days in Messina? It isn't the most attractive place on Sicily and the traffic can be tragic.

I wouldn't be certain about loving Sicily, it is our least favourite destination of our 100 odd trips. It doesn't feel like Italy and can be quite demanding, it is very scruffy in areas.

Sicily is like Italy 40 years ago before the tourists ruined it -magical! You will love it especially if you go to the smaller towns and sights and stay away or spend less time in the "tour and cruise ship" areas. Messina and Taormina have been overrun with the day trippers from the cruise ships so I would readjust your itinerary if you can? Mt. Etna is amazing and if it has settled down ,I would highly recommend a day trip to there out of Catania.
