Travel time between Frankfurt & Bellagio??

For a trip to Germany & Italy in 14 weeks and five days (but who is counting, ha ha), I am seeking info about travel time by car from Frankfurt to Bellagio. Yes, I see the route to take but I have no idea of the TIME it takes. I can't get any of the web sites to do that route for me properly, so I am at a loss.

Kay,
I hope you're not planning to drive from Frankfurt to Bellagio upon arrival at the airport! The distance is about 560kms and under normal driving conditions on major arteries will encompass at least seven hours - that's non-stop driving time with no unexpected traffic, detours, accidents or other delays.
You can plot detailed driving directions and times at www.falk.de Brush up on your German first, the webiste doesn't offer English.

Nope, Wes, I will actually be driving down from Wiesbaden (after two days there, post-airport arrival), but I said Frankfurt as the departure point, just for simplicity's sake.
I will check out that web site and pretend I know German. Har.
So, bottom line, you suggest that the total drive time is seven hours? That's better than I feared, actually.
Thanks, er, danke, that is!

Wes doesn't know about www.euroshell.com - - or have you had bad experiences with it in the past while they were trying to "improve" it? In any event, it works well nowadays, and no reason to struggle with any language other than your own first language (assuming it's English, or Dutch, or German or several others, I think).

Anyhow, I put in Wiesbaden to MENaggio (rather than Bellagio), and it came back with the answer 616 km (6 hrs 39 minutes), traveling via Basel and Lugano. Then it's a 10 minute ferry ride to Bellagio.

If you enter Bellagio as your destination, the distance and time are virtually the same, but they don't describe very clearly (at least not clear to me) how you get to Bellagio once you leave Lugano.

I am sure Wes knows about Euroshell, as do I. That was one of the web sites I referred to as not being helpful. It wouldn't take the places I typed in but rather kept sending me on a route from Germany down to Sorrento, even though I typed in something else. Temporary computer glitch I guess.
Anyway, the www.falk.de is a wonderful alternative. Just like the fantastic Falk map company from which it comes, the site is detailed and fabulous, worked like a charm. It IS all in Germany though so that takes a bit of puzzling through, if you are a non-German speaker, as am I. Still, it is worth the struggle. Thanks to all. I dreamt last night of our upcoming trip and I just can't wait!!

Since we always rent a car on our visits to relatives in Germany and are planning to drive to Italy from there this summer, I was intrigued by this question. In the states I always have been successful with www.mapquest.com. I checked it out and it does give driving directions for Europe as well (in English).

As an alternative, kk and Rex, one may use the Michelin site.
http://www.michelin-travel.com/eng/sommaire.cgi

Though the driving times are somewhat overestimated (for the kind of driving I'm used to) it has served me well because it has plenty of options (including circular routes passing through 4/5 cities, if you use the "prepare your route" option).

The Michelin recommended route from Wiesbaden to Bellagio is 662km long, 7 hours nonstop. It goes through Basel, Luzern, Lugano and Como. In other words, it goes round the lake, not considering the Menaggio-Bellagio ferry option.

To Menaggio it gives 634km and 6:31 hours (though more scenic, this route would be longer to Bellagio because of the ferry waiting and stuff).

One may also use the "quickest route" option, which gives 643km/6:29 to Menaggio and 666km/6:56 to Bellagio.

Ah, Paulo, so helpful as always. Now I have all these great map alternatives. Yesterday not only did Euroshell let me down, but mapquest did as well.

Beyond Bellagio, we are going to drive down to the western Ligurian coast and are considering staying here, about half way between Savona and San Remo.

Staying there for five nights, we can go west to the French Riviera (where my husband longs to go), visit Genoa and maybe Turin, and of course go of to the eastern Ligurian coast.
So, where is a gorgeous spot to lunch somewhere between Portofino and the Cinque Terre? I figure that will be a one day trip.
I know. I know. The Cinque Terre is great, but it's not our choice to stay there, for many reasons.
Both my husband and son have been around the Mediterranean (they will both be on this trip), but I never have even seen it on a flyover. I am SO excited.
Still, I am open to TONS of suggestions about everything in that area....especially from you, PAULO!
Thanks in advance. kk

If you don't mind a splurge (and if it can be done outside a Monday or Tesday), almost halfway between Portofino and the Cinqueterre (closer to Portofino), your bid is the Cą Peo in Leivi is your bid. Everything's special, form top to bottom. You'll pay Lit 100,000/person + wine, though. Reservations a must. You may start training your Italian at (some's in English!)

Since I'm at it, a couple more ...

Though I haven't tasted it, the best restaurant in San Remo is without doubt Paolo and Barbara (via Roma 47, tel. +39 0184/531653, fax. +39 0184/545266, closed all Wednesday and Thursday for lunch, reservations a must, a complete dinner for 2, including a good bottle of Barolo wine, should be about Lit 300,000). The place is very intimate and elegant. The cuisine is superb.

If you happen to drive back to your base in Laigueglia with empty stomachs, you may try the Baiadelsole (piazza Cavour 8, tel. +39 0182/690019; fax. +39 0182/690237, closed Mondays, open only for dinner outside summer, reservations recommended; complete dinner for two + bottle nice wine should cost Lit 200,000).

Grazie, Paulo! I will add these to my growing file. My son will be traveling with us and not only is he used to driving in Italy but he also speaks (some) Italian.
If anything else comes to mind for this region, please feel free to keep adding! I am just tickled/delighted that at long last I am going somewhere that the wonderful, famous, knowledgeable, kind Paulo can advise me. Sheer Fodorite bliss!

Hi KK...we drove from Zermatt to Bellagio. The driving site we used was
www.cslease.com. The drive from Como to Bellagio up the East side of the lake is only 30 km, however, it was the most twisty curvy, dangerous 30km we had ever driven...it made the Autobahn and the Autostrade look tame. Altough, it was a beautiful drive, it took over 1 hour. I suggest going to Mennagio, on the West side, and taking the ferry accross the lake to Bellagio. The ferry's run all day long and with the car and two adults it was less than $7.00 dollars.

We drove through 7 countries and Bellagio was the highlight of the trip. Absolutely beautiful.
So, give yourself lots of time, and make sure the gas tank is full!
Happy trails...Beth

Gee,Beth, thanks! I have a low tolerance for that kind of dangerous road. I sure do appreciate the tip. Sounds like the ferry route is perfect for me. Also, thanks for another web-based itinerary planning site. This thread now has many to choose from...all useful and great. Happy trails.
