travel suggestions
I'm just learning the in's and out's here so pardon me if I've asked a repetive request. My wife and I will arrive in Barcelona on Sept. 11 and leave on Sept. 28. Our main objective other than experiencing Spain is to photograph lighthouses and enjoy the local (rural) culture. We plan to spend a couple of days recuperating in the Barcelona area (near the airport) and then head north along the coast in a rental car trying to find lighthouses and wildlife. When we've had our fill of that area we plan to head south and do the same. We are also considering Majorca for the same. Finally ending up in the Barcelona airport area prior to departure. On a previous trip to Spain (Galicia) we did about the same and stayed mostly in Hostels and usually were pleasantly satisfied. We travel cheap and try to eat at local restaurants but generally just follow our nose. On our last trip we were displeased with the sur-charges that banks added for cashing travelers checks. We are also concerned about security of our belongings since we are photographers and tend to carry a lot of gear with us. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Bob-
It sounds like a great trip, but I have some general advice for successful posting here. 1.Mention the destination in the title of your post. That way,you can catch the attention of people who have actually been there . 2.Try to ask specific questions if you can. Good luck-I hope you get lots of good advice. |
Thanks Massagediva. I'll give it another try.

Don't take Travelers Cheques! Use ATM Cards! My Credit Union Visa Check Card assesses no fee for Withdrawals anywhere in the world.
Sep 15 is el Dia de Cantabria: a holiday in Santander and thereabouts. Your plans are quite ambitious for 15-days in Spain. If you go to Mallorca you may have to cut out some of Spain's north coast. |
Thanks Nedsireland. We might just devote the time to the NE. As I mentioned, we try to follow our nose.

Bob Swanson writes: "... We might just devote the time to the NE. ..." If you mean the Costas Dorada and Brava I think that would be a mistake! You might miss some outstanding scenery and the exquisite Basque cuisine found in País Vasco: San Sebastian, Bilbao, Laredo, Santander and all the way to San Vicente de la Barquera and Llanes in the Principality of Asturias. You may find some of the best scenery in Spain at the foothills of the Picos de Europa and up in the mountains near Covadonga.
I'm not into Lighthouses (Faros) but I'm sure you will find some along the Cantabria Coast (Mar Cantabrico), if only where the mouth of the rio Deva separates Cantabria from Asturias (not too far from Unquera). We stayed at Hostal Paris in Santander (el Sardinero). It's seasonal: open until 30 Sep, but a nice jumping off point for daytrips. |
Hello again, Nedsireland
during our trip to Galicia a couple of years ago we approached the Basque region but didn't actually get there being thoroughly satisfied with what we found in Galicia. We feel that on this trip we would just hug the east coast with maybe a venture into the mountains. Appreciate the advice but probably won't go cross country. Again, thank you. BS |
