Travel sleepwear

As I was folding up my old, soft flannel pajamas for our trip later this week, I started wondering what other people wear to bed when away from home.

What do you sleep in when you travel?

adeben Mar 31st, 2008 02:02 PM

Whatever the fashionistas in Paris and Rome are currently decreeing as appropriate nightwear, lest I feel like a tourist if I have to leave my hotel unexpectedly in the middle of the night.

Ronda Mar 31st, 2008 02:15 PM

In that case don't forget your high heel slippers trimmed in fur! lol

I usually take a big nightshirt that can double as a swimsuit cover up if the need arises.

Christina Mar 31st, 2008 02:17 PM

the same thing as at home -- so it varies, depending on time of year and weather.

palette Mar 31st, 2008 02:25 PM

The longest t-shirt I own. One year we did have the fire alarm go off at the hotel, and I just grabbed my raincoat - I wasn't wasting packing space for a bathrobe. Mind you I travel with female friends so French nighties would be a waste on many levels.

Carrybean Mar 31st, 2008 02:37 PM

I have some really garish Nick & Nora PJ's I wear when I travel.

melissa19 Mar 31st, 2008 03:14 PM

Silk pjs pack very nicely... though i wear them at home as well.

Barbara_in_CT Mar 31st, 2008 03:19 PM

I wear a Karen Neuberger nightshirt. It is cool when it needs to be and warm when necessary. Definitely not revealing in case of a fire drill. Packs more compactly than my favorite PJ's.

FainaAgain Mar 31st, 2008 03:48 PM

Whatever has the least weight and volume while drying fast (after laundry that is, not after an accident :)) )

bettyk Mar 31st, 2008 03:48 PM

Usually a large tshirt. If the room is chilly, then I'll put on my silk long underwear bottoms.

lennyba Mar 31st, 2008 03:52 PM

Same as at home, unless we're staying in someone's house - nekkid. Lightweight, easy to clean, and takes up no space in the carryone.

cafegoddess Mar 31st, 2008 03:56 PM

White t-shirts from M&S. The softest t-shirt in the world.

suze Mar 31st, 2008 04:22 PM

t-shirt with light cotton pants of some kind or t-shirt under a silk bathrobe.

i would never sleep naked in a strange hotel in case of emergency in the night.

nytraveler Mar 31st, 2008 04:32 PM

I bring an oversized tee shirt (most of the way to the knees) so I have something to wear when breakfast is delivered. Beau bring PJ bottoms for the same reason.

Or if it's a special romantic sort of trip I'll bring a couple of pretty nighties.

Padraig Mar 31st, 2008 04:40 PM

I knew that I shouldn't have clicked on this thread!

bozama Mar 31st, 2008 04:51 PM

Although I love my flannels, they never travel with me, not even on a ski holiday,, too bulky.
Tshirt and capri lenth pj bottoms. Lightweight , and should be able to squish down to nothing.

whoknew Mar 31st, 2008 05:21 PM

suze-but the real question is...are you OK with sleeping naked in familiar hotel rooms? Hee...

I have soft cotton pajamas that are very lightweight and pack well.

My ex used to generate a lot of body heat so I was always warm. Now I just ask for extra blankets.

lennyba Mar 31st, 2008 05:24 PM

If there was an emergency in a strange (or familiar) hotel room in the middle of the night, I'd do the same thing I'd do if there were an emergency at home in the middle of the night - throw on the robe at the end of the bed. The question was "what do you sleep in"?

gomiki Mar 31st, 2008 05:32 PM

Well worn flannel boxer shorts and a short V-neck T-shirt (just below waist length) from Victoria's Secret. No matter what time of year.

tzarinna Mar 31st, 2008 05:45 PM

I have nice pj's and I have my roughin it pj's. I tend to carry my nice ones, 'cause I'm on holiday and they make me feel good. :p

noe847 Mar 31st, 2008 07:03 PM

Lately I've been packing silk satin pajamas. My favorite are charcoal gray. They're compact, comfortable, presentable (for whatever reason!), and perfect for nearly every temperature.

Iowa_Redhead Mar 31st, 2008 08:55 PM

Generally a lightweight camisole and boxers. Sometimes I'll throw in a modal tank top and capris. Insanely soft and great for puttering around in my hotel room.

icithecat Mar 31st, 2008 10:16 PM

Wear? To sleep in? Hmmmmmmmm?

hetismij Mar 31st, 2008 10:52 PM

I'm another who sleeps in the all together. Even on holiday.

suze Apr 1st, 2008 06:54 AM

I now always take SOMEthing to sleep in, separate from what I'm wearing during the day.

One trip I skipped anything extra (taking "packing light" to a fault) figuring I really didn't need something separate for the hotel room or at night. Found out it's much nicer to have something clean that is only for lounging around the hotel room or sleeping... tank, capris, tshirt, shorts, lightweight robe, whatever.

Kate Apr 1st, 2008 08:38 AM

My birthday suit. Well, holidays are special occasions, right?

nona1 Apr 1st, 2008 02:22 PM

Same as at home, nowt.

The only exception being when I go camping and I do wear a pair of sweat pants and a T-shirt to simplify those middle of the night/first thing pee trips.

StCirq Apr 1st, 2008 02:33 PM

Depends on whom I'm traveling with :)

november_moon Apr 1st, 2008 04:09 PM

I love pjs - and I like having something to lounge around the hotel room in - so I take lightweight cotton or silk pjs, usually a sleeveless top and capri-length pants.

GranthamMommy Apr 1st, 2008 04:37 PM

I always treat myself to something new for the trip. New and soft, no coffee stains from home. Appropriate for the weather.

fbc34 Apr 1st, 2008 05:02 PM

When my mother was in her early 80s she was on a Globus tour in Ireland. After a long day of touring and a group dinner, she returned to her hotel room exhausted. She tore off her clothes and fell into bed exhausted. Too tired to put on her nightie. In the middle of the night, she got up to go to the bathroom. In her sleepiness, however, she picked the wrong door, and found herself out in the hall, locked out of her room, in just her undies. Took her two years to tell her two daughters of her trip down the elevator to the desk to get a new key to her room! So pack carefully!

bozama Apr 1st, 2008 05:06 PM

fbc ,, that is without a doubt the funniest image I have read about in a long time,, your poor old mom, at her age, having to go down to the reception,, talk about dieing of embarrassment..

Travelnut Apr 1st, 2008 08:54 PM

Full=length black slip. Very light-weight, very non-flannel.

grrr Apr 2nd, 2008 12:19 AM

What do you sleep in when you travel?

Chanel No 5

caladrius Apr 2nd, 2008 12:24 AM

So far, an old grey t-shirt, actually my old HS gym shirt, and care bears pj pants. But since I'll be sharing bathrooms with strangers in the up-coming trips, probably will look for something a little nicer.

Lawchick Apr 2nd, 2008 12:46 AM

Why do you need something to sleep in - particularly when most people are worried about their luggage weight.

I couldn't imagine wearing anything in bed

caladrius Apr 2nd, 2008 12:49 AM

Lawchick- some people are uncomfortable about keeping their bare skin next to sheets they haven't cleaned themselves and don't know if they're clean enough or so. I don't think I could work up the courage to sleep nekkid in a hotel bed, even with previous experience several years ago as a hotel maid/housekeeping.

palette Apr 4th, 2008 01:46 PM

So Padraig, reading but not responding to the question - isn't that breaking some kind of Fodor rule!

LilyLace Apr 5th, 2008 10:26 AM

I purchased a black silk long john set a few years back and always pack themif there's a chance it'll be cool. Also a silk chemise. They all wash really well and as I sleep without anything I do like to lounge sometimes.
