Travel Rome to Sorrento

Hello, I am looking for advice on getting from point A to B. We will be flying into Rome (Fiuicino, FCO?) and then going somehow to Sorrento straight away for the first part of our trip. I imagine I will need to transfer from the airport to train station via taxi? Or bus? We don't want to be "that guy" cramming luggage onto public transport.

Thanks for any pointers!

Take the train from FCO to Rome Termini station. Take the train from Termini to Naples (Napoli Centrale). Go downstairs and take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento.

The Leonardo Express is the train that goes from the airport (FCO) to the central train station (Roma Termini). It takes about 35 minutes and is highly efficient. I would recommend taking it over a taxi actually - trains don't get stuck in infernal Roman traffic jams while the meter runs up your fare... plus everyone has luggage because they are all coming or going to the airport. The trains have space for luggage - no worries.

From the Roma Termini station take a train to the central Naples train station (Napoli Centrale). The EuroStar trains are the nicest and take about 1.5 hours. It is a scenic ride.

Once you arrive in Naples, go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana station (Napoli Garibaldi). Napoli Centrale (main trains) is upstairs from Napoli Garibaldi (Circumvesuviana). Watch out for extortionist porters who will "guide" you to the Circumvesuviana area and carry your luggage... and then demand 50€ for doing so. It's easy to find the staircase yourself (it is large and in the middle of the platform) - and there is a big Circumvesuviana sign over it.

Get on the next Citcumvesuviana train to Sorrento (about 70 minutes).

Total price per person...

Leonardo Express - 9,50€ each

Train to Naples (depends on which train) - 22€ (approximately)

Circumvesuviana to Sorrento - 3,60€ each

TOTAL - approximately 35€

We did this on May 14th, 2005 without a hitch. It does take a while to get down to Sorrento with the transfers but it goes pretty quickly.

P.S.
Leonardo Express train Departure times from FCO airport are on the :07 and the :37 (i.e., 8:07am, 8:37am, 9:07am, 9:37am...)

There are signs (look for train picture and word "treni") throughout the airport leading you to the Leonardo Express area.

Also, we rode 2nd class EuroStar Rome-Naples for 22,11€ each. 2nd class on a EuroStar train is still extremely nice - no need to spring for 1st class. Our train departed at 10:45am and arrived at 12:30 - so 1 hr, 45 minutes.

The Circumvesuviana trains from Naples to Sorrento tend to leave on the :10 and the :40 (i.e., 4:10pm, 4:40 or 4:43pm).

Hope this helps!

Hi dom,

There is also a Marozzi bus leaving Rome Tiburtina train station at 15:00 weekdays arriving Sorrento Piazza Sasso at 18:45, if that fits your schedule.

It is cheaper than the train and easier with luggage.

You take the train from FCO to Tiburtina from the same station as for Rome TE.

Wow ira,
I never knew about that bus. I am putting that in my file for our next trip!

there are also buses from Rome airport to Positano and it seems these must have to pass by Sorrento - if not a short bus ride back to Sorrento. I have no details but friend was given info by a hotel he was staying in in Positano.

Thanks for the reminder PAL.

It's the same Marozzi bus.

I just checked the site.

They list only the 07:00 bus to Positano, but there are both the 07:00 and 15:00 buses to Sorrento on weekdays.
