We've lived in Paris for a little over a year and have only just started to explore the country (too busy until now), so here's what we have planned so far:

Next weekend: Champagne region
Weekend after that: Bordeaux

September: Istanbul/Turquoise coast (long weekend following business trip)
September: La Rochelle

October: Apple festival in Normandy
October: Seoul and Japanese Ryukyu Islands (business trip plus a long weekend's holiday)

November: Istanbul (business trip plus sightseeing - this will be my last trip to Turkey for the project I'm working on and probably my first chance to really have a look around Istanbul)
November: somewhere in the south of France

December: Toronto and Ontario (home for Christmas)
December/New Year's: dive holiday in Key Largo or Mexico

January/February 2007: (paid) home leave (Vancouver) (we get an extra 2 weeks' holiday every 2 years to go home)

April 2007: Oman/UAE - Arabic language/diving holiday (birthday, anniversary)

May 2007: Canary Islands (holiday postponed from this year, due to a family emergency)

Late summer/fall 2007: Round-the-world diving and language study holiday (3 months) - in our semi-realistic dreams.

Now that work has settled down, we're going to try to go away at least once every 4-5 weeks, even if it's only a 2-3 day break. One thing that this last difficult year (relocation, brutal work schedule, and then a death in our immediate family) has taught us is that you should make the time now for pleasure and special experiences. You never know when something could come up that will prevent you from realising your dreams. No one ever died thinking, "I wish I took fewer holidays".

Hi

You sure plan ahead I was about to ask the same question on the forum...how far in advance to people plan their trips. This is how it looks for me:

September/October 2006: Bolivia/Peru
April 2007: Beach vacation Thailand or Vietnam maybe
Summer 2007: Week trip to Italy maybe. Florence and Naples
Late 2007: Visiting family in South Africa

But this is a very preliminary agenda...things can change fast

Well today we're headed up the peninsula to San Francisco on CalTrain with visitors from Ohio who are frothing at the mouth to ride a cable car.

In October-November we're flying to Australia for almost a month. I won the trip (flights and a week's accomodation) on a local television station!

Thanksgiving in Nashville with my sister and her family.

I am always either planning my next vacation or dreaming about where I'd like to go next.

I already went to Costa Rica for 2 weeks this spring, and have already booked our flights and hotels in Paris and Italy. Going for 2 weeks at the end of September and early October.

August 2006: Montreal (Most European City without leaving North America)
Sept/Oct 2006 Italy and Paris

Fall 2007: Croatia or
Fall 2007: Spain and Morocco

And so many more places I hope to go.....

None of this is definite yet, but if all works out as I hope it will, here's where we might be going:

late Sept/early Oct 2006 - Netherlands and Belgium (This trip hinges upon a possible business trip - just waiting for the client to schedule the meeting so that I can go ahead and make my own plans!)

Spring/early Summer 2007 - Turkey to celebrate my 30th birthday!

October 2007: 14-night Mediterranean and Black Sea cruise with 3 pre-cruise nights in Rome. Might see the family in Naples while we are in port.

Galicia for a few days in August.

Before the end of the year, a few days in either Andulusia, Sicily or Tuscany or maybe two of the three. Might consider a few days in Turkey in December.

It feels a little odd not to have a major trip planned at the moment. We are thinking about Norway for next summer, but nothing is set in stone yet (and there are several other good options under consideration, as well).

In the meantime, I have two upcoming trips to New York City - one for business in a couple of weeks and one for fun in October. I used to go to New York a lot, but the last time was in 2002, so I'm looking forward to these trips.

<< Rex-- Southern Spain/Lisbon after Thanksgiving would be my suggestion. Then again, there is ALWAYS Paris...! >>

Yes, Portugal is definitely on my list (but so is Southern Spain).

I got an e-mail about the town of Figueira da Foz today. Hoping that the correspondent will post here.

Anyone have an interest in a Fodorites' trip there (maybe involving a rental?)

Hooray, I got an email last week from a client asking me if I can cover a conference in Paris this fall. Hmmm, I think I can squeeze it in ;-) I will take a few days before or after to check out the newly re-opened Orangerie. Nice that someone else will be picking up the transportation costs and a good portion of the hotel and meal expenses. And I get to choose the hotel and restaurants, no boring corporate spots.

As soon as we get our UK drivers' licenses squared away, we plan to do some week-end explorations with the dog in the countryside. We've already picked one place. Go to www.ruralretreats.co.uk and under name of property, pick Apple Barn (Monmouthshire). Perfect for a long autumn week-end. October or November.

Late November/early December: convention in Chicago (I love that town!) followed by several days in Florida visiting Mom.

Mid-December/Christmas: Two weeks driving trip in Germany/Austria with stops in Baden-Baden, Salzburg, Vienna, and Brussels (on the drive back). We may spend Christmas in Baden-Baden, haven't decided yet. Cocker spaniel riding along, of course!

March 2007: Annual two-week work/leisure trip to Vienna with a 5 day side trip to Venice.

Definitely this coming January. right now I'm thinking 3 weeks split between Portugal, Croatia and Paris. However that could change with any new trip reports that pop up. I usually don't get my plane ticket until mid December.

Rex: We spent last Thanksgiving in Buenos Aires and loved it. Beautiful city, wonderful people, great food, etc.

Travels for the year 2006:

April - Week in Oahu

August - Weekend in Sonora visiting friends

September - Savannah & St. Augustine

November - Long-awaited Panama Canal cruise

Nothing yet set for 2007, but we're considering a river boat cruise (this would be a first for us) to Moscow and St. Petersburg, etc.

We haven't been to Europe for about three years and we're starting to miss it. May try to plan something to Croatia, Portugal or Sicily, whichever seems most economical and easiest to get to, since all three have been destinations we've looked forward to.

If my "minor" knee surgery next week goes as planned, we will spend eight days in Paris over Christmas.

If not, we will be in our backyard drinking martinis.
