I prefer www.pbase.com

You can search for virtually anywhere in the world and find photos.

I've posted a few of mine there.

www.pbase.com has some of the most beautiful photography.

I use www.webshots.com because it is free.

I post them on my own website that I own, but after reading the terms and conditions of a lot of the photo places, I'd pick PBASE

It seems to be owned by a hobbyist and fellow photographer. The rest that I've seen all tell you up front, in the fine print, that by uploading to their site, you're granting them perpetual license to use your photos and stories however they wish, including selling them. Not that mine would be worth selling, but I didn't care much for the idea.

Ofoto and that sort of thing is good if you want to order prints of photos, but are not that easy for people wanting just to look at your pics.

One more vote for pbase.com! SeaUrchin turned me on to this site, it's great. Easy user interface for uploading your photos & arranging albums, 30 day free trial and inexpensive after that.

I love ofoto. When friends post their photos there, they are stored after I look at them and can go there to view them over and over again.
Lovely photos from Flygirl,Ger, Scarlett, Myriam, Crazymina, and so many others.

<i>www.pbase.com has some of the most beautiful photography.</i>

From what I've seen, I agree with that. I'm getting ready to finally scan a lot of my travel photos and am trying to decide on a site. I'd been leaning towards ofoto or webshots, because they're free, but now think I might go with pbase, at the $23 annual level, because it has such a great look to it.

Nice photos of Venice and Tuscany, Dick. But my favorite is that wonderful photo of the little girl with the snake and great smile. That brightened my Sunday morning. Since you use pbase, maybe you could answer a question that I couldn't find the answer to on pbase's site. If you have a photo viewable as both a thumbnail size and a larger size, are both sizes included in your overall size allotment?

<i>The rest that I've seen all tell you up front, in the fine print, that by uploading to their site, you're granting them perpetual license to use your photos and stories however they wish, including selling them. Not that mine would be worth selling, but I didn't care much for the idea.</i>

Very interesting, Clifton. I hadn't noticed that about those sites.

Clifton, I did not realize that either. I like worldisround for any number of reasons, but I will have to check the fine print. As a published photographer, Phil Flash would NOT be ok with giving up the rights to any of his shots!

Hi Capo!

Hi Marilyn. I wasn't sure as worldisround is one I hadn't checked. They say right up front hat your content remains your own. (good deal)

http://www.worldisround.com/help/policy.html

Webshots on the other hand was one I did know about and they keep your content. They make it a little tricky to find a link to their terms, but:

http://www.webshots.com/html/terms.html

Virtual Tourist also helps themselves to your stuff. Ofoto and Shutterfly are a different deal, as they aren't so much in the personal website business as they are in selling you prints of your photos. (of course, when you share your album, anyone else can buy a print of your photo and Kodak gets the proceeds, so it's a little like licensing)

Thanks, Clifton! I'm glad to maintain my high opinion of worldisround. pbase presentation seems the best aesthetically and perhaps because of that (or is there another reason) the photos look the best, but it does cost.

This info is very timely as I'm getting ready to put a lot of photos on line.

Capoo,

You have great taste..LOL..that little girl is our grandaughter. We had taken her to Disney World for her 5th birthday.

We tried to talk her out of it but she REALLY wanted that rubber snake. I'm afraid her parents may have &quot;misplaced&quot; the snake when she returned home.

I think that this link might answer your question about size allocation on pbase.

Clifton,

Good point reminding people aout the rights they might sign away with some photo sites. That's why I use pbase.

Check with your internet service provider. Most accounts include available space for a small website...and you are already paying for it in your monthly fee.

They usually also provide templates and step by step layout instructions to help build your site.

Hi Marilyn!

Clifton, thanks for the additional info about worldisround.

Thanks for the link, Dick. She has such a wonderful smile in that photo, and her pink shirt gives it a great splash of color. I'm not a pro by any means, but I'd suggest submitting that to a photo contest sometime. I think it's very eye-catching and can't help but make you smile.

Thanks Jim. I know I've got some website space, but haven't looked into it yet.

I have some of my stuff on Ofoto which is free and easy to use. I used to use Pbase but got frustrated because the site was so often down or so slow as to be unusable. Seems to have improved since they started pushing paid membership.

But I figured if I was going to pay for a site where I could store and showcase my work I might as well also be able to sell it there too. I have been using dpchallenge.com for a while and they launched a new offshoot site called DPC Prints. If you become a paid member of DPC Challenge you can upload photos to your portfolio and choose to sell them as Prints too. It's about $25 I think. I have a wishlist of other people's work I want to buy!! It's reasonably new so hasn't the breadth of work on it that pbase does yet but it's growing fast.

You're welcome to have a look as I have lots of London and Venice images up at the moment:

NEVER underestimate what sells. Anyone who surrenders their copyright, amateur or professional, is out of their mind. I strongly urge everyone to NOT patronize any online service that requires the above conditions. Always read the fine print.

NYCFoodSnob is absolutely correct. You'd be surprised what sells.

Of all the pictures I have on my site, by best selling ones are the rather generic ones from San Antonio, Texas.

I found out they host a ton of conventions there. And sure, enough, the majority of my sales go for company brochures.

So yes, be careful what you agree to.

That's true. It's one of the reason I never load anything other than LOW resolution images to Ofoto. If anyone is daft enough to want to publish passport photo size prints of them (and pay for the privelege) more fool them. The resolution isn't good enough to allow any larger sizes of prints.

Since Ofoto offers me no % of sales profits I'm not giving it anything worthwhile to sell.

Just an FYI for Ofoto users:

The space is dependant upon buying prints. I just got an email from Ofoto stating that our account and online albums are to be deleted in Oct if we do not buy prints before then.

We've gotten a decent photo printer for everyday kind of prints and hadn't purchased in a while, so I figure that's fair enough that they'd delete us. I just wanted to let people know that Ofoto will only work so long as just a storage location. Keeping that space is dependant on continuing to be a paying customer.

Wow, Clifton, that is a surprise! I can't remember reading anything about that sort of quid pro quo but I doubt if I read the fine print. I guess I'll figure out a new home for the few things I have on ofoto.
