travel options from Naples to Sardinia

Can anyone telll me what the options are for travel between Naples and Sardinia? Ferry-cost, length of travel, frequency, etc? Is there a direct flight by air? Cost? Mille grazie

This is a fun question to answer.
Aside from connecting by air in Rome or taking the frequent ferry out of Civitavecchia, here are the DIRECT transportation options from Naples to Sardinia:

AIR: Naples to Cagliari nonstop in 1 hour on Meridiana Airlines www.meridiana.it

CATAMARAN (service commenced this summer): Naples to Golfo Aranci nonstop in six hours by SNAV "Sardinia Jet" giant passenger/car catamaran; DAILY at 8:30 from 24 June to 5 September ONLY; one-way adult fare Euro 80 or 95, depending on season. Catamaran displaces 5000 tons, travels at over 40 knots and can accommodate 800 passengers in reclining seats, as well as 200 automobiles. Ride can be noisy and choppy, and is subject to cancellation in bad weather www.snav.it

OVERNIGHT CAR FERRY: Naples to Palau nonstop in 14 hours by Linee Lauro on FRIDAYS at 20:00 from 11 June to 17 September ONLY. Ferry displaces 11,500 tons, carries 1050 passengers in cabins and reclining seats and 250 autos at a speed of 19 knots. www.medmargroup.it

OVERNIGHT CAR FERRY: Naples to Cagliari in 16 hours by Tirrenia Lines. On THURSDAYS at 19:15 YEAR ROUND. Additionally on TUESDAYS at 19:15 from 13 July to 7 September ONLY. Ferry ship "Emilia" displaces 12,500 tons, carries 2,000 passengers in cabins and reclining seats and 610 autos at a speed of 19.5 knots. www.tirrenia.it

Fares vary considerably on the overnight car ferries depending on the season and the accommodation requested. You can also book the car ferries on line. By taking the ferry, you save one night's hotel.

I overlooked a nonstop flight on Meridiana Airlines from Naples to Olbia on Fridays and Saturdays at 11:10, and on Mondays and Sundays at 22:00, all flights from 12 June to 12 September ONLY.

Naples to Cagliari on Meridiana is daily at 13:20, from 1 June to 30 October. Don't know about the winter schedules.

Flights into Alghero require a plane change in Rome. There are also many more flights to both Cagliari and Olbia by connecting in Rome.

There is YET ANOTHER overnight car ferry service between Naples and Sardinia:

TTT Lines operates four weekly car ferry runs between Naples and Olbia, a 12-hour journey.

You guys sound like the pros at this, so I have a question. We are trying to leave Sicily area on Saturday, October 16 for Naples with our car. I can't find an English website. Does anything run on Saturdays that late in the year?

janellelewis: what do you mean "Sicily area"? You can do an easy drive from Taormina to Naples in less than 6 hours for example -- which is probably quicker than any ferry will be. Add about two more hours if driving from Palermo. Having done an overnight on the Sardinia to Sicily ferry, I'd drive any day to avoid that again!
