Travel insurance, Theft in Europe.

I'm a pro photographer going to ITALY, SWITZERLAND and FRANCE for the first time.

I will have $3000 worth of camera gear with me. Is there anything I can do to avoid theft?

Look like a local? Carry pepper spray? Learn Kung-Fu? LOL ;-)

I am also traveling by train and I thought of making a short cable leash to put around my wrist and attach it to my bag for when I am sleeping.

I have heard a few horror stories.

Any tips???

Thanks,

HOV

" Is there anything I can do to avoid theft?"

What do you do at home to avoid theft? Do the same.

And remember for every "horror" story there are proabably thousands of trips with no "horror stories" we just don't post or say anything LOL!

I would secure my bag and lock it while I sleep on the train. I would also trust my instincts. I have gotten "lost" in some less then desirable neighborhoods. My camera and valuables stay stashed until I get to someplace I feel safer.

Myself, I would not carry pepper spray. No way you will look like a local toting a bunch of camera equipment plus your luggage, no worries there -lol! You could book a private cabin to avoid worry on overnight trains?

Carrying pepper spray is likely to get you arrested. It is illegal in most European countries. If you were to use it you could be charged with causing bodily harm, even in self defence.

Lock the bag. Make sure it doesn't look like a camera bag. Make sure it is cut proof - line it with chickenwire maybe, or use an external wire bag - though that tends to advertise something worth stealing, or use a hard metal case such as Pelican make. You can buy cable locks so you can lock it to something. You can buy locks to lock your camera and tripod whilst using them. I assume it all fits into hand baggage - you don't want to check it if you can help it - apart from lightfingers things could get broken due to harsh handling.
Take out good insurance if you haven't already.
Be alert. Never leave your bag on the gound whilst concentrating on getting a photoetc - all the usual precautions.
