I've also purchased from Travel Guard, though not needed to make a claim yet. As someone mentioned I do not make the policy cover a big amount for the trip, and buy it more for the medical aspect.

I do the pick/choose options and some of the upgrades I include are to make the Travel Guard policy the primary policy for health coverage, not the default secondary, and the upgraded medical evacuation.

I have BCBS and remember the first time that I went it took a bit of questioning but my policy, yes, would cover me but it would be me paying and the policy reimbursing when I return home--not what I wanted, so I do the primary insurance upgrade on my trip medical insurance to not have it out of my pocket.

Yes, the trip insurance is out of my pocket ! I just make that part of my overall trip budget. For my next 10-day trip, I called the trip value $1000 and with the medical upgrades the insurance was a little under $70.

I've seen on the insuremytrip site, the option to buy insurance that covers cancellation for any reason. Has anyone ever bought this type of insurance or had any dealings with it? I'm sure it's more expensive, but I'm curious.

zeppole--I guess you didn't read my entire comment. I basically said it would be good for chronic worriers--and it absolutely would be--but then I went on to say that it might ALSO be good if a traveller had a large investment in things that could not be cancelled or if a traveller didn't have health insurance coverage overseas. There are other circumstances as well, but I did not want to read a book.

Don't be so sensitive.

caroline_edinburgh - No... being under 26 and/or a student will get you extra discounts through STA Travel, but they'll book for anyone of any age. And they get some fantastic deals because of their network.

From their site:

"A travel insurance plan through AIG Travel Guard can provide affordable, worldwide coverage for travelers of ANY AGE."

(I've booked the coverage online and over the phone... both times they asked my age (30s) and if I was a student (no), and it was no problem.)

scotlib, where did you get the information that just because your policy is primary coverage, that means you won't have to pay out of pocket and be reimbursed later? I have bought a couple policies and have the read the terms of Travel Guard, including the primary coverage upgrade, and I didn't see anywhere it said that.

Primary coverage doesn't mean that, it just means they will pay the costs without consideration of what your regular health insurance pays -- in other words, you don't have to wait for your own insurance to determine what it will pay before the TravelGuard decides how much of the remainder it will pay. But primary coverage doesn't mean you won't have to pay the bill yourself first.

Now maybe that is what they will do somehow (how would they do that, exactly?), but that isn't what the term primary coverage means nor what their own definition says on their website, which is:

<<With the Primary Coverage Upgrade for medical expense, the plan pays for covered medical expenses without regard to other insurance or coverage that you may have. Secondary Coverage pays for covered expenses not already covered by your primary health insurance plan.>>

Christina, thank you for posting. If I am giving mis-information, that's no good!

Sigh, as I have read in more than one post, read the certificate. The information on the certificate is what will count, not one's assumption.

I'll read up on mine. Thanks, and Cheers

Thanks, slangevar, I didn't know that.
