Travel insurance, interruption or cancelation?

I am going to France for 5 weeks next summer. I am mostly concerned that a close relative might might pass away, either sometime before or during my trip. With minamal concerns that my 2 sons (ages 18 & 22 / both responsible) at home might accidentally burn down the house! :) I understand that I could be covered by "Cancel for Any Reason" insurance, and that is extra. But what about the policies that include a death? (Travel Guard) I only want to cover my non refundable airfare... Also It is my understanding that even with insurance, I would not get all the money back? So the best option would be?

What I would do is call either:
Squaremouth or Insure My Trip and speak with a representative.

Tell them exactly your concerns and what you want covered
I have found both companies to be very helpful.

They will tell you which policies would suit you. And I would definitely concern myself about the medical coverage unless your current insurance covers you abroad.

Lucky you to be able to be in France for five weeks!

I agree with actually speaking with a representative. That so-called "any reason" may, in fact, have all sorts of restrictions and the death of a relative may or may not be included.

There is no such as any reason insurance. There will always be exclusions and restrictions. In order to cover pre-existing conditions and not pay extra SOME policies require that you buy the insurance within 10 ten to two weeks of paying for first reservation.

Do your homework before you book anything.

and from my experience TravelGuard will for sure do their best to give you all reasons why they cannot file a claim. I would avoid them. Also be careful about what is a "close relative" and clearly your kids burning down the house would never fly.

There are many levels of Travelguard including those which will cover may events, but of course, the premium is higher on those. We use Travelguard all the time.

We use Travelguard. We did cancel a trip a few years ago and Travelguard sent us a check in a timely manner. We had to cancel because my aunt was very sick and I was her caregiver. Her doctor was required to write a letter stating her condition and that we were advised not to leave her.

Travel Guard paid us 100% of our claim quickly.
