Travel insurance

Have you had any recent experience with
Travelex insurance company?

Thanks!

Yes. I use it everytime I go to Europe which is three times per year and I am very satisfied with the coverage I get for such a small price. Any specific questions about it?

Larry, do you buy trip coverage insurance or just medical insurance?

kybourbon May 9th, 2004 07:56 PM

It depends on what you want covered as to what company you use as they are all different. Most offer medical, baggage, trip interruption/cancellation (for allowed reasons which varies) but as far as I know only one covers default and that is Travel Guard. They maintain a list of companies/airlines they won't issue insurance on and you aren't covered if they file bankruptcy within a week or two of the policy purchase.

To Wandering Texan

My main interest is with having coverage that will provide medical evacuation should I get injured or seriously hurt and need medical evacuation or repatriation should I die in Europe. Medical evac can cost $50,000.00 believe it or not. The plan I buy costs about $48 for 31 days coverage and includes:
trip delay/missed connection-$500
itenerary change-250
accident medical expense-5,000
sickness medical expense-5,000
medical evac/repatriation-50,000
baggage-1,000
baggage delay-200
common carrier AD&D-25,000
24 hour AD&D throughout trip-10,000
Travel assistance services
no trip cancellation/interruption or bankruptcy/default coverages. I don't need this as I do not use tours, travel agents and book all flights, hotels etc myself.
Contact your local AAA auto club for other details as they are the agent for Travelex.

I just went to my local AAA office & asked about this type of insurance.
First off--they had never heard of Travelex company & then I was told that the only way I could get insurance was if I was booking a tour or had laid out money already for a trip!
I tried to explain that I was making all my own travel plans ( horrors )& the insurance was mostly for medical type travel insurance, but they still were mystified.

Christina May 10th, 2004 10:16 AM

Travelegs, you should run, not walk, from such a AAA travel office. That is sheer incompetence. Not only are they wrong about not being able to buy individual insurance, but Travelex is a huge international company. They bought out Thomas Cooks, for example, and do currency exchanges all over US and Europe, in addition to their other products.

Travelegs May 10th, 2004 12:04 PM

Interesting.
The AAA office just called me & told me to call IMGlobal for what I wanted. They also told me that Travelex was a company like American Express & it wasn't what I wanted!!

Insuremytrip.com has a list of travel insurance companies.

To Travelegs,

Instead of continuing to listen to bad advice from a travel office that has not got a clue and instead of listening to me or anyone else who has used Travelex for international travel for many years; why don't you do yourself a favor and go to :
www.travelex-insurance.com
and see if they offer what you want at the price you want to pay. Then make a decision for yourself? This is not rocket science. It's really very simple. Have a great trip and I hope you never have need to file a travel insurance claim which means you will be wasting your money in the first place and that's a good thing.
