Travel Inn OR Holiday Inn
 

I have a reservation at both Travel Inn, County Hall and Holiday Inn Mayflower at around the same price for my forthcoming July trip to London. I have to cancel one of them. Any opinion on which is the more desirable hotel?

Sorry that should have been Mayfair not Mayflower

Holiday Inn Mayfair is airconditioned and more upscale than the Travel Inn. It is usually priced quite a bit higher than the Travel Inn County Hall (which is not airconditioned). I'd take the Holiday Inn.

David is correct. The Holiday Inn heirarchy of properties, from top to bottom, is InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Express by Holiday Inn. The Travel Inns are, at best, equivalent to Express by Holiday Inn.

Thanks, I will cancel the TI reservation. Any suggestions on good but not too expensive eating places near HI, Mayfair?

For "cheap" breakfasts, walk north on Berkeley Street towards Berkeley Square. On your left is a little pedestrianized street--Lansdown Row, I believe--that has spots to eat or take away breakfast/lunch. There's also TWO Starbucks here, if that interests you.

There is a Pret A Manger on Picadilly--great fresh sandwiches and salads (and no smoking on premises). Just east is Fortnum and Mason, the upscale department store, where you can eat at any of several restaurants. Bottom floor Fountains restaurant is medium-priced (for London) and is open at times when the store is closed. Tea at F&M is wonderful too.

The Running Footman pub on Charles Street (Berkeley St. to Berkeley Square, then left) has an upstairs dining area and typical, decent pub food.
