TRAVEL IN ROME

I need to get from Termini train station in Rome to the Fumincini (?spelling) airport at about 4am. What is the best/cheapest/safest way?

Here are some notes I will be using to figure out the same thing, except we will leave directly from our apartment. You don't say if youa re teraveling alone, so I'm including all of my info for our family of four. Maybe some of it will help you too - the following has been cut and pasted from various recent Fodors threads:

http://www.limoservicerome.com/

They were there at airport ahead of time, waited with me while the other member in my party arrived and safely drove us to hotel in centro storico in a Mercedes car.

Also used this service from Rome hotel to FCO. Again, Mercedes car.

45 euros each way + tip. ( June, 2010)

cabbie quoted forty-five euros one way between the airport and Rome.

Search on this forum for Fodorites' favorites, using Rome, limo, and airport as your search terms

you can use the Leonardo Express train from Rome to the airport. The price for the airport train is 14€

You can book a limo service to take you to the airport cheaper than you can take the train. Taxis are also an option as they are a set fee (currently 40€ for 4 people including luggage although they have requested a price increase). Rome Shuttle Limousine would be 50€ for your family and would pick you up at your hotel. Otherwise, you would have to pay transport (taxi?) from your hotel to the train station and also pay for the train.

I highly recommend Rome Shuttle Limousine. I've been using them for years, having them do pickups at all kinds of weird hours, and they have always been waiting for me. The price is good and the service is great.

OP cannot do the train at 4am. Question is why do you need to be at FCO by 4 am? I'm not aware of any flights that leave that early and the check-in counters will not be open until after 5.

You don't need to get to Fiumicino by 4 am because the terminal does not open until 4:30 or 5, I forget which. Ask your host when they open. We entered the minute the doors opened, I think at 4:30, were second in line, and stood there for at least a half hour before they opened the check-in desk.

I agree Rome Shuttle Limousine is the way to go. Well worth the cost, believe me! Reliable, in our expeerience.

can_tra11, it appears that you're on one of the early 06:00 0r 06:30 flights out of FCO. We've been on those flights often - esepcially using KLM to connect in AMS.

If you have a 06:00 flight, and you need to be there this early, you're only options are private shuttle, COTRAL bus, or a taxi. The Leonardo Express does not start until 05:52; the SITBus Shuttle until 05:00; and the FM1 at 05:14.

I would not recommend the COTRAL bus as the arrival "times" are all across the board. That leaves a private group, like those mentioned above - or www.romecabs.com, www.romashuttle.com, or http://tinyurl.com/limos-com. We've used all of these with success.

Or the taxi. You can book a taxi in advance - we've done this often. If you have an mobile, many of the taxi services will send you an SMS as they head for your hotel/apt in the early AM. We found this quite reassuring. We were often on these early flights because they always seemed to be the least expensive (especially smaller lines like Wiz Air)

So, I'd look at setting up a private shuttle or coordinating a taxi pick-up. Prices will depend on the company, pick-up time, your starting location, and number of folks. Inside the "fixed" taxi rate zone - see this post for maps: http://tinyurl.com/Rome-fixed-rate

I wouldn't rush to get there too early. As others said, the gates don't even open that early and all of the restaurants/cafes will be closed. We made the mistake, on our first trip to Rome, of getting to the airport at 4:30 and ended up standing around for a long time.

We've also used Rome Shuttle Limousine and were quite pleased. On our most recent trip we just decided to go to the taxi stand (we were near Piazza Navona) and get a taxi without booking in advance and that also worked just fine.
