Travel in Eastern Europe
I'm starting a two-week Eastern Europe trip from London. Definite stops: Krakow, Prague, Vienna. Uncertain whether to include Budapest. Is there a good way to get from London to Krakow? Is a brief Budapest stop worth while? What about inter-city travel in Eastern Europe?

When is your trip starting? Easyjet flies from Gatwick to Krakow with one way fares in November being about £30. Closer dates sre much higher in price.
Budapest is great if you can spend a couple of days (we prefered it to Prague - just less tourist orientated) but with only two weeks you already seem to be covering a huge area so I would suggest lesving it out this trip.
Trains between Prague, Vienna and Budapest are great although some journeys are long (Budapest - Prague is about 7 hours)You can buy tickets in the country a couple of days in advance at a discounted rate. See www.seat61.com for detailed help about trains. There are cheap flights between cities but don't forget that these may be using out of the way airports.

I, too, prefer Budapest to Vienna, although if you haven't been Prague is definitely worth at least a couple f days.
http://seat61.com/Poland.htm will also tell you how to get from the UK to Krakow by train, with a description of the various routes.

Budapest is also a high recommendation from me, but you'll need more than just a brief stop. 2 or 3 days is best. I preferred it to Prague though Prague is a nice city too.
With the proliferation of new countries since the the breakup of the Soviet Union and others, not sure whats considered 'Eastern Europe' now, but Hungary (and Budapest) are commonly referred to as located in Central Europe now.

Thanks for the advice. Trip is last two weeks in September. Based on advice, will probably skip Budapest this trip, fly to Krakow out of Gatwick and linger in Krakow,Prague, Vienna. First time in all those cities.
