Headed to enjoy octoberfest this year in Munich. We figured we should probably try to see some other parts of Germany while we re there. My group is looking to make it to Amsterdam from Munich and back in 3 days. Does this seem feasible? Any ideas on a good route and where to stay along the way? Was hoping to stay at one location along the way (possibly half way between) and commute from there. We re taking public transportation.

So you have three days (4 nights?) between Munich and Amsterdam? I don't understand your question about staying in one location and commuting. Are you planning to stay in city X, between Amsterdam and Munich and commuting to both Amsterdam and Munich? And is 3 days all the time you have in Europe or are you going elsewhere?

You'll be on the train for 15-18 hours or longer to take this round trip. Feasible? It is feasible and trains are great, but in Europe you should see things with your feet on the ground, not from a train window.... so IMO your group's A'dam idea is *@#! (add your favorite derogatory adjective) and an extremely poor use of your time if you want to see more of Germany.

Save yourselves the time, the expense and the trouble. If you want to visit a different country... Salzburg, Austria is less than 2 hours away by direct train. It's a great place for a couple of days. You'll save some money too. 4 people traveling together pay €11 each for the one-way trip using a "Bavaria Ticket" day pass.

If you want to see more of Germany... take the train to Nuremberg (also 2 hours from Munich.) You can use that same Bavaria ticket each way.

With 2 or 3 nights in Nuremberg, you might have time for a side trip from Nuremberg to Bamberg (about 45 minutes by train.) Use one Bavaria ticket day pass for the round trip:

Thanks for the feedback! I think we divided Austria is the better route. I didn't realize Amsterdam was quite that far!! Hopefully all cities will have some octoberfest celebrations going on the 1st week of October.

Oktoberfest is almost exclusively the name of the beer festival in München (Munich). So when talking of Oktoberfest everyone in Germany thinks of München. In the fall there are myriads of wine and beer festivals all over Germany (especially in the South), but usually they aren't called Oktoberfest.

Heidelberg would be a nice stop about half way and one of the loveliest cities in Germany - one of few not ravaged in WW2 (some say because the U.S. Allies wanted to make it their HQs after the war which they did!)

Trains are best unless you have vans or cars depending on size of group.
