Travel from US to Florence, Italy

What is my best way to get from Washington, DC to Florence, Italy; ie, which is the best airport in Italy to fly into?

No direct flights from US to Florence. You will have to connect somewhere in Europe: rome, Milan, Paris, London, Frankfurt. . . so choose your best options to one of these.

Oh--for Florence you might also arrive in Pisa, one hour away, but you would still have to connect in europe somewhere.

Florence does have an airport but it is closed right now. The closest alternative airport is Pisa. If you are looking for direct flights, Milan and Rome are about the same distance from Florence.

This answer changes seasonally, and especially according to the month, this year (FLR, Florence Peretola airport is closed for a few months, for construction).

Use Expedia or Travelocity or Orbitz to investigate your options.

And tell us when you are traveling.

Also clarify if one of your three airports are better, or worse for you (DCA, IAD, BWI) - - though you shoukd use WAS when searching.

By the way, I know that DCA has no (or few) transoceanic flights. But it can still be a one-stop departure airport for many Europe destinations (DCA->US airport gateway airport->Europe destination).

Last of all, consider Eurofly.com to Bologna (not on Expedia, etc - - I think).

Best wishes,

Rex

The Florence airport is supposed to re-open in early May, so keep your fingers crossed. One simple itinerary would be Dulles- Frankfurt- Florence. If Florence isn't open in time, they will route you to Pisa probably, then you take a train to Florence. You might also be able to fly Dulles-Milan, then train from there to Florence.

The airport should have reopened, according to recent reports. Most airlines will be back by first week of May.
