All electronic timetables show the expensive Eurostar train connections via Milan. The cheaper, shorter (distance only!) and more scenic itineraries go either via
Novara - Borgomanero - Domodossola
Novara - Oleggio - Domodossola
or
via Aosta - bus - Orsieres - train - Martigny - Lausanne - Berne.

neckervd - IF you had looked at bahn.de you would have seen that if has the Novara - Domodossola route, which takes an extra 30 minutes and a second change. The route may be scenic, but I'd take 4:30 and one change over 5:00 and two.

Yes, I did mean Bern, I looked up the train information. The dates I need are not yet available. Would anyone recommend traveling by car rather than train? It looks like we would be able to get there sooner if we drive. I put in early train date just to see what there is and there is only one time. We would not get to Bern until late and we have rooms booked meeting our daughter and family at Interlaken. We have not travel much and never in Europe. Attending the World Master games in Turin then onto Switzerland.

Where on earth are you looking that you only see one train??? (If it's RailEurope, don't look there.)
If you have never traveled by train in Europe before, I highly recommend spending some time reading this site: seat61.com
If you follow my advice above and use the schedules at bahn.de and put in a random date in May you will certainly see more than one train option per day. If you want to arrive in the afternoon I would take the 09:53, which arrives at 14:23 (2:23 pm). I don't see the same train in June, but it's possible that all the timetables have yet to be loaded, as trenitalia.it shows it for June.
According to google maps the shortest distance by road is 345 km. Supposedly it takes around 4 hours, but I would add a fair amount of contingency to that, which means it might take longer than the train, plus you have to add tolls and a cross-border drop-off fee to the rental cost.
