Travel from Tallinn to E. Petersburg
 

Will be in Tallinn early August 2007. Need options to travel to and from East Petersburg. Prefer a tour group for a day tour of the city. Cruise? Train? Plane? How to make arrangements, costs, travel time, all important factors. Thanks for any help!

Do you mean St. Petersburg? If so, there are several high speed ferries between the two cities. If you don't have a visa for Russia, you most likely won't be able to see anything unless you book a tour through a travel agency and go around on their visa with the tour group.

eyes, I am afraid you are mixing up St.Petersburg and Helsinki, Finland. While there are 20+ daily high speed boats between Helsinki and Tallinn, there are no high speed boats between St.Petersburg and Tallinn. There is twice a week slow boat Tallinn-Helsinki-St.Petersburg.

The way to go Tallinn-St.Petersburg is either Eurolines bus or plane, depending on your finances. There are no trains.

I took a bus from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Tallinn, Estonia a few years ago. It took about 5 hours and was only about $10 (USD). Customs was a breeze--I was so worried, traveling by myself.

We traveled from St. Petersburg to Tallinn on a bus but we were with a travel group doing a St. Petersburg and Baltics tour. The bus trip itself was pretty lengthy and the scenery, while interesting in spots was quite monotonous. It doesn't go through mountains or near water, just pretty much flat country, although there are some forest views here and there. There is the option of boat or plane as well.

We had guided tours that were sponsored by our tour group while we were in St. Petersburg, but I noticed that individual travelers at the hotel were joining up with tour groups at the front desk, so I don't think you would have a problem finding that. In fact, I remember seeing advertisements for same on some of the St. Petersburg web sites that I visited before leaving on my trip.

Have a wonderful time: I was there in the winter and missed the White Nights which you will be able to experience.
