travel from ST Moritz to Zurick
We are taking the GE to St Moritz and then need to get back to Zurick to catch our flight home. How do you suggest we do that and should we spend a night after the train somewhere other than Zurick?

I'm confused. Are you spending the night in St. Moritz? Is your flight out of Zurich the day after you arrive in St. Moritz?
Whatever, the train from St. Moritz to Zurich will take 3-3.5 hours... a few minutes longer if you're going straight to the airport. What time is your flight?

From St Moritz you take a train to Chur where you always have to change trains because of track width gauge differences (narrow gauge from St Moritz - normal wider gauge from Chcur to Zurich - there are trains about hourly or more on each segment - no need booking in advance. What are your other Swiss trains - will you have a pass?
And why go to St Moritz just for the night - the town underwhelms manhy and is expensive - why not go to Chur, stay in that pleasant city and then leisurely go on to Zurich the next tday (but the GE's portion from Reichenau to St Moritz is awesomely scenic as the tiny train negotiates the Albula curves - a series of curves inside and outside a mountain up to the Albula Pass - this section of railway has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its prodigious (for circa 1900) railway engineering.
Why are you taking the Glacier Express - because you've heard of it - I and many others who have ridden trains all over Switzerland would rate it not nearly the most scenic train ride in Switzerland - in fact it turns into a rather tedious all-day marathon for many whose attention turns more to the unique tilting wine glasses than, for Switzerland, so so scenery most of the way.
If just doing the GE because it's publicized so much I'd look at place like the Jungfrau Region for having even more dramatic and awesomely scenic train rides you do not have to sit for 8 hours or so on.
For lots of great stuff on Swiss trains check these Uber good sources: www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com.

What will you do before your GE ride?
Where will you board the GE: Zermatt, Visp, Andermatt?
If you don't want to backtrack along the same itinerary, board a train running via Zernez - Vereinatunnel - Klosters to Landquart and change there to a Zurich bound train (same journey time).
