Travel from Santorini to Naxos & Naxos to Athens - ferry or air?

Hello,
We would like to get from Santorini to Naxos on Friday, 28 May, and from Naxos to Athens on Tuesday, 1 June. I am having trouble finding flights on these dates. We prefer to fly if possible just to save time, unless it is actually faster to take a ferry. Can anyone advise us on this please?

Thank you!

Hi millemar --
(1 To NAXOS -- There are no flights between Santorini & Naxos, plane couldn't get up to 2,000 feet then down quickly enough, lol! it only takes 2 hours max by ferry. Right now the schedule only shows the"Old Faithful" -- the daily Blue Star Paros (just about every day of year) ... dep 15:30 (3:30) arrives Naxos 5:30. this is a "regular" ferry... the big one, with outside decks,so as you leave u can get the awesome view of the clifftop, from below ... if you flew in, it's great to take this, not a "fast-ferry" where you're shut inside... and which only saves minutes anyway. And hey! it's only January! By the end of may you'll probably have 2 more ferries to choose from... and no need to buy ticket until day of sail, or night before.

(2) TO ATHENS -- AIR --Only 1 flight per day, usually around 1:30 pm, and a smallish plane (40 passengers?) because of small airstrip. It is a govt-controlled govt-subsidy fllight. It has always been Olympic Airlines until OA's sale. The new entity Olympic Air probably will take on this run, but because March 1 is the date for allotting these routes, they are not listing a schedule. A flight takes about 50 minutes and probably will cost around €65?

(3) TO ATHENS -- FERRY: The 2 daily year-round ferry runs are again Blue Star. First is 9:30 am arr Piraeus 3 pm (1500). Second is 1800 (6 pm) arrive 23:25 (11:25). For either of these 5.5 hour trips, buy a "reserved economy" seat. The ordinary Economy seat entitles you to a seat on the deck or -- when inside -- find a seat in a cafe, or on chairs along a corridor. For €4 more, "reserved Economy" means, again, you can sit on deck to sunbathe or socialize as long as you like, but when you want to read, rest, nap,you have areserved seat indoors, on an upholstered lean=back seat with lots of leg room (TIP: when u buy at an agency, ask for a seat in the smaller forward L or R sections; they are very quiet).
I often advise people to avoid chopping up the middle of the day with the first run -- instead, take the 2nd one... which I nickname "the Dinner ferry." You'll have to check out of your hotel room noon-ish, but you can leave your luggage behind the desk and usually you can arrange with your hotelier for use of a bathroom/shower in late afternoon. THUS, you get another wonderful afternoon at the beach (and even a nap on a sunlounger), Then come in, shower & change, get to the ferry. Watch sunset on deck, eat something in the cafe, read a book in your comfy seat, arrive 11:25. On weekends, the Metro runs until 1:30 am -- so you can reach your Plaka area hotel shortly after midnight.

Whoops... just noticed Tuesday is your date from Naxos to Athens. No problem anyway; the Metro goes until midnight, and it's right across the Street from where Blue Star docks. Just be sure to go downstairs at the front of the crowd to pick up your baggage (which you will have left in storage racks by the big Ramp-Door). Then hustle right across the street to Metro. If you're staying in Plaka district, it's the best-quickest choice. Taxi fares, by the meter, are roughly 20 Euros, but at midnight they roughly double.

If you decide you want to taxi, it's a good idea to chat up other tourists on the ferry and find another couple who are going to same area as you and arrange BEFOREHAND to share a taxi. Tell the driver ONE destination and all get out there; otherwise you'll be charged (legally) 2 fares. And use the taxi line and insist that driver use the meter.

Travelerjan, thank you - this information is really helpful. When we arrive in Athens from Naxos, our plan is to rent a car and drive to Nafplion so given that, we are probably better of flying. But ferry sounds good from Santorini to Naxos. It sounds like we can book the ferry when we're on Santorini, and we can't book the air from Naxos to Athens until March 1 - right?

In May the blue Star from Santorini to Naxos will not be full so you can simply get your tickets when you are on Santorini.
We will be following in your footsteps and will be traveling Santorini to Naxos on May 31.
You will just have to wait a bit longer to find out if and when the daily Naxos to Athens flight is available. You always have the ferry as a last resort. If you are renting a car it is a pretty easy drive from the airport to Nauplion on a 4 lane toll road so flying makes a lot of sense.

If taking ferry it's also possible to rent a car & have the agency bring the car to the pier... or you walk down the street a short way. It's slightly "hairier" to get onto the big highway out of town, but with a careful map-marking by the rental agency you can do it... and maybe the car-rental guy will let y you "caravan" behind him to the on-ramp to the highway.... then as stanbr says, the rest of the way is a 4-lane toll road.

I really hope we can get a flight from Naxos to Athens - if not, the ferry ride is really long so we will have to leave Naxos on the morning ferry. The afternoon one just gets in too late for us to then do the drive to Nafplion, and we don't want to have to do a one-night stay at the Athens port.

Stanbr, we will be in Naxos for a day or so (5/31 & 6/1) at the same time. Would you like to meet us for a drink or a meal in town? We are leaving on 1 June, hopefully on an afternoon flight vs the morning ferry.

Hi All, we'll be following stanbr's footsteps, taking the ferry from Santorini to Naxos on June 29th (a Tuesday). In addition to the Blue Star, does anyone know if there is an earlier ferry from Santorini arriving in Naxos by late morning or early afternoon? Thanks!

Moonlion, additional ferries often show up, but not this early. The 1500 (3 pm) Blue Star is the one that is always on the schedule... but as the season moves along, there can be one at 7 am or 9 am ... patience, patience, June addiions won't show up until at least April. JUst keep checking GTP.gr. Better website than openseas for general picture, because you can put in "June" without a specific date, and see the PATTERN of ferry service ... also gtp.gr will often put in a ferry with a red-letter line... not officially approved yet ... as alert.

We should be arriving Naxos on the 3 o'clock Blue Star unless there is an earlier ferry from Santorini and we will not know that for a couple of months.
We met Travelerjan in Naxos through this forum about 5 years ago and have a good friend now.
On our first night we always have an ouzo on the waterfront and then head up to our favorite taverna, Taverna to Kastro for dinner just before sunset. Jan says it is not a good as it used to be but you can't believe everything you read on the internet so we just have to check that out for ourselves.

Stop by Hotel Glaros on St George beach and give Alex the number where you can be reached and we will do our best to connect on the 31st.

We are taking the same route however are going from Santorini to Naxos on May 15, then onto Athens on Thursday May 20. Hoping to arrive in Naxos in the a.m. as 3 of our fellow travellers are joining us just for the day. They would need a late ferry back to Santorini which I see there is one.
We were too hoping to get to Athens in less time than the ferry so will await Olympia schedule too so we have more time to explore Athens. (Some of us fly home on Friday evening 21st, my daughter and I fly home very early Sat 22nd).
Thanks to all whoanswer all our questions on a regular basis. I am soooooo looking forward to our trip. Hope you all have a great time too.

So far the only ferry scheduled on May 15 for Santorini>Naxos doesn't depart until 3:30pm, arriving on Naxos at 5:30pm. It's doubtful that an early-morning ferry will be added.

Blue Star Ferries offers a 7am departure from Santorini to Naxos on May 16 if that's any help.

Thanks! Sunday 16th won't work as they have flight home that day at 1:00 p.m. from Santorini to London. Oh well, not a big deal.

millemar- this is off topic, but how did you decide to visit Santorini and then Naxos for the order of the islands you're visiting on your trip? I'm currently trying to decide where to start, and am going the same islands with the last few days of the trip in Athens.

Blueberry -- I think you determine your island sequence by what is the best connection for you . There are at least 4-6 flights per day to/from Naxos on 2 airlines Olympic & Aegean -- plus Athens AIr and Sky Express (small planes) in High season.

By contrast, there is only 1 flilght per day to/from Naxos, and a smaller plane (50?psgr), on Olympic. The one TO Naxos used to go about 1 pm, so if you arrived on one of those 9 or 10 am flights from USA you could make the connection. But in 2010 the flight is at 10 am (WACKY), so almost no international flight on that day can make the connection. When Aegean "absorbs" Olympic in next month or so, we hope this schedule will be normalized. THe once-daily flight Naxos TO athens currently is at 11:10 am.

Therefore, most people end up going to Santorini first, then to Naxos. If they want to fly back, they have to get a seat on that 11:10 plane. Otherwise it's one of 2 very large ferries. If you don't want to eat up most of a day on board (9:45 am - 3 pm), you can get the 6pm ferry (I call it the "dinner ferry") that arrives Piraeus 11:30 or so. Your call.

This was incredibly helpful. Thank you. I'll check next month to see if any new flights later in the day become available with Aegean absorbing Olympic, and otherwise plan to start in Santorini,
Just to confirm, do you think a ferry from Athens to Santorini or Naxos to start the trip is too cumbersome for the first day of travel (coming from NY)?

You're going to be tired, without a doubt, but if you take the slower car ferry you can buy tickets for the reclining aircraft-style reserved seats and nap on the way.
