Travel from Rome to Siena
I will be arriving in Rome around midday, after an overnight flight. I have reservations that evening in a hotel just outside of Siena. I am wondering the quickest way to get to Siena, without it costing a fortune?

Buses to Siena are from Fiumicino and Ciampi airport. Check the SENA schedule.
If they are not running and you are at FCO then take a local train that brings you to Roma Tiburtina, i.e. the second largest train station of Rome. There is a train from Airport every 15 minutes and the course takes 41 minutes. The time table is available at: www.trenitalia.it.
Next to the train station Roma Tiburtina there is the travel office of the SENA Bus Company, where you can get the tickets to Siena. The bus stop is next to the travel office. The time table is available at: www.sena.it. Buses depart at 6:30, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00, 18:30, 20:00 and in some days: 21:30. Bus takes about 2:45 hours.
If flying into Ciampi, and there is no direct bus, take the tube into Rome (free bus to station from airport to subway) then go see SENA.

Thank you very much. I was considering renting a car in the airport, but it would have to be automatic. My concern with that is how difficult a drive it would be in terms of getting lost!

You can rent the GPS with the car. You can also rent a car in Siena to use for day trips.
Enjoy.
In Tuscany, we have some new video of Montalcino, San Gimignano and Volterra coming soon.
Chiusi is also a great site:

If you are getting off an overnight flight, why not let someone else do the driving? Take the bus. Take a taxi to your hotel. Snooze. Rent some other day if you feel like it.
You don't say what time of year you are going, but if you are arriving midday, calculate that it will take at least 90 minutes to go thru passport control, collect your luggage and pick up your rental car. Then figure out when it will get dark.
You do not want to be driving jet-lagged in the dark in Italy, even with GPS and an automatic transmission.

We rented a car once in Siena for a couple of days, and stopped in their office another time to ask a question. Nice and helpful people,..Hertz... You'd need to take a taxi from your hotel to the Hertz office. Would be great for side trips into the Tuscany countryside and towns.
It was a last minute things AFTER we were already in Siena, however I still called back to the Hertz office in U.S. for the reservation and came out ahead pricewise. So you might want to reserve before you leav home.
I'd definitely take the bus from Rome ....though we've never done it. Sounds by far the safest.!
