Train to Naples, go down the stairs to the Circumvesuviana train line to Sorrento. Then take a cab or a bus to Positano. The cabs are parked in the lot of the train station, ask first the price and if too much, walk over to the area where the busses are in the same lot and ask which one to take. You might want to learn a little Italian for all of this, but you will be glad you did.

As hydrofoils work til December, perhaps it is better train for Napoli Mergellina ( Eurostar ) then hydrofoil for Positano.

The Positano boats can be an adventure in rough seas.

My advice would be to take the train (usually an IC to Sicily) from Rome to Salerno (it pauses at Naples).

From Salerno, take the SITA bus up through Amalfi to Positano.

A ferry also runs up from Salerno to Amalfi a couple times a day.

I don't believe any hydrofoils run to Positano in December. If any are advertised, there is a high risk of cancellation by rough seas. A train to Salerno, then a bus is probably the best option.

Just did the exact trip 2 weeks ago and the train to Salerno and bus to Positano is probably your best bet. There is a SITA bus from Salerno to Amalfi where you have to change buses to Positano (bus is to Sorrento). If I remember correctly the buses are coordinated so you will not have to wait long in Amalfi if you don't want to. I do not have the schedule handy but if you want it just post a reply and I will dig it up when I get home.

Hello Peggy,

The easiest option if cost isn't an issue is limo (pre-booked) or taxi from Naples Station.
Cost approx Euro 100.00

Alternatively limo/taxi Sorrento-Positano would cost Euro 40-50.00

If you decide to use public transport, the quickest option is via SORRENTO (or Meta), NOT Salerno.
i.e. Circumvesuviana from Naples, then bus from Sorrento or Meta.

Sorrento-Positano takes 40 mins.
Meta-Positano takes 25 mins. but is less convenient with luggage.
(Salerno-Positano takes 2 hours).

Hope this helps ...

Steve
