Travel from Rome to Florence & Assisi
My husband and I are planning our trip to Rome during Christmas. Can we just buy a train ticket at station in Rome for Florence and Assisi, or do we have to have a reservation way in advance.

Christmas is a little far off now. I would suggest you reserve in advance as Florence is one place a lot of legs tend to go for Xmas. The place will be thronged with Tourists as Florence undergoes a transformation during Xmas every year with Christmas lights, Concerts and Ice Skating

You can purchase your ticket at the station from the many machines or from a ticket window. The machines are easy to use and have an English language option. Very quick and simple. You can also purchase from a travel agency in Rome.
Purchasing in advance may provide a discounted ticket. Otherwise, there is no need to purchase in advance. |
Thank you all for your reply. It will be Christmas before you know it.

You CAN purchase tickets at the station on the day of travel. Leave sufficient time to complete the process.
If you are taking the highspeed train between Rome and Florence, then there is a significant discount if you buy advance fare non-refundable tickets online. This must be done several months in advance. |
Thanks Greg for your advise

>>>This must be done several months in advance.<<<
Discounted tickets can be purchased as little as 48 hours in advance if still available, but no further than four months in advance. The discounted fares can sell out. Here is the info. http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/inde...003f16f90aRCRD The winter schedules for Trenitalia usually start early to mid December. They often aren't often loaded on Trenitalia until close to that time, but keep checking. There is also a new private train company on the major routes so you can check their schedules/prices also. http://www.italotreno.it/EN/Pages/default.aspx Most trains to Assisi are slow R trains and there is no advantage of buying R tickets in advance as there are no discounts or reserved seating. |
