Travel from LHR to Oxford, or Eversham
If one desired to rent a car in Oxford, or perhaps Eversham. Would it best to bus or train to one of these places. Another possibility might be train to Moreton on Marsh and pick up a car from an Eversham company that delivers. Seeking advice re best sytrategy.

There's no train from LHR to anywhere except London Paddington and a few suburban stations on the way.
Virtually everyone in Oxford travels to Heathrow by bus. Virtually every train from London and Reading to Moreton in Marsh goes on to Evesham (note proper spellings): the most common way for visitors to get to them from Heathrow is by bus to Reading station, then catching the train about 25 to 30 mins after it leaves Paddington. In either case, hiring a car to drive on our highly congested and fast-driving roads after an overnight flight from another continent is stupid, irresponsible and if you're involved in an accident can escalate any criminal charges you might face or invalidate your insurance. The easiest solution is to get the bus to Oxford, overnight there then collect the car after a decent night's sleep in a very attractive, walker friendly, largely medieval town. Agree w/ everything flanner says - one other option/variation would be to spend that first car-less night in Windsor. It is only 7 miles from LHR and you can collect a car at either Windsor or at LHR the next morning.
It is an easy drive from there to Oxford and then on towards Evesham |
I'll be taking the bus from LHR to Oxford; I'm a decent walker but will be coming from west coast of usa; any sense of availability of taxis at the Oxford end? Going to Mansfield College for a conference. Thanks for any info.

It probably would be quicker walking - buses stop at Gloucester Green which is less than half a mile from the college.
