Travel from Berlin to Vienna

How complicated is a train trip from Berlin to Vienna?

Not very. See:

It will take 8 to 9 hrs, with one train change at either Nuernberg, Munich or Prague. There are also overnight solutions (with sleeping cars Munich - Vienna, Hannover - Vienna or Prague - Bratislava) These latters take 12 - 13 hrs.

Too long for most and night train not na option - fly or break your journey in Munich for a night or so - for trains yes www.seat61.com has all the details and for general train info check www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

"night train not na option"
Why?
Berlin dp 18.05 with dinner at the board restaurant, more than 1 hr for train change at Munich, at least 7 hrs in a sleeping car compartment and arrival at Vienna at 6.35am doesn't sound that bad

You can get 10 hours sleep aboard the night train by taking IC 832 (dep. 19:49) from Berlin to Hannover and transferring there to NightJet 491 (dep. 21:57) to Vienna (arr. 8:19). You can book that connection via the DB web site. If sold out there might be a workaround: try to book the legs separatly - ICE on the DB web site, NightJet on the ÖBB web site.

Thanks all.

From Berlin it's not far by train to Hannover where you could board the night train to Vienna -to me better than 8-9 hours of daytime train.

Oops should have looked at sla019's similar but more precise comments. I've taken many night trains in Germany and as such trains go very nice - some even have douche and WC in compartment (but very pricey).

Most people can sleep on night trains and IME they are a good experience to try at least once.
