ttt means "to the top" - - a practice that gets this question more visibility, by bringing it back up "to the top" where it is more likely to be seen.
One oresumes that SalB thinks that the question has merit, or is also interested in reading an answer, personally.
If this were me, I would favor car, but that would have to take into account, the need to pay a hefty drop charge to rent a car in France and return in in Italy - - take the train part way (e.g., San Remo) and rent there - - but that too, depends on where is jip going after San Gimignano?
Best wishes,
Rex

We're leasing a car in Nice, driving throughout Tuscany and Umbria and returning the car to Nice. It was considerably cheaper to do this than to lease in Italy. Besides, I get a week in Provence out of the deal!! One needs to rest somewhere before embarking on a tour of Italy . . .

If you want route information, try http://www.mappy.fr/
It's a map web site and if you type in both cities, it will tell you how long it takes, how far it is, how much petrol you'll need, etc.

We lease our car directly from Peugeot. We've done this for years and they are just wonderful.
If you go to http://www.peugeot.com/sodexa/ you will find all the information about the cars. We get the 206 automatic. It's a small car but drives like a dream and it's automatic so if my husband couldn't drive for some reason, I could handle it.
There is a "request for information" box on the web site and they will send you everything you need. If you want the info more quickly, telephone them. They have a phone number in the US.
If you don't care about the automatic, it will be cheaper.
