Travel EMERGENCY! Italy-delayed plane-miss tour

Someone please help! I spent 5 hrs in my airport trying to get to Rome for a tour that meets Sat. night. Now, my husband & I are leaving tomorrow and won't get to Rome until 7:30am SUNDAY! We will miss the bus that goes to Pompeii. WE will have to "catch up." Anyone recommend a train, private car, etc?! I AM FRANTIC!!! I'm covered under travel ins. for the cost. I've looked at Eurostar but can't find enough info fast enough. There are just 2 adults. Can we catch a train from the airport, or do we have to take the train to Termi Stat. & go from there... HELP! I'm counting on you!

First of all, take a deep breath!Do you know where your group will be staying on Sunday Evening? Is the Pompeii trip a daytrip from Rome or will you be staying in Naples or Sorrento? You might want to concentrate on getting to your hotel for the evening, then worry about Pompeii. You need to get to Termini station if you're heading to Naples, then take the train from there. Can you give some more info, please?

Hello WFT. How awful for you.

In case you don't get any personal recommendations, I know that these limo services have had many recommendations on this board:

Best of luck.

THANKS! This is so like the math prob. on the SAT. A bus leaves Rome at 8AM and a train leaves Rome at 10:45...
Sun. eve. hotel is in Capri. This tour leaves via bus from Rome (@ 8am I'm guessing) to Pompeii for a tour, then to Sorrento and then to Capri. (The tour is Globus - Best of Italy. They don't give a timeline.)

If you are covered by travel insurance, I would not be bothered with the stress of public transportation. Get one of the limo services to pick you up at FCO. Personally, I would go straight to Sorrento and take the ferry to Capri and chill out at the hotel and pick up wiht the tour then. Do you have a contact number for the tour group? It would be as well to let them know what you plan to do.

regards Ger

Have you contacted Globus? Did they arrange the air for you? If so - they have to fix this. If not - they should tell you the best way to catch up. That's why you're paying for the tour.

Thanks so far, everyone. We did the air w/o Globus. They are supposed to call us back in the morning. I agree with everyone - we may have to miss Pompeii and wait for the group in Capri. You all are the best.

Just one more voice to encourage you to go straight to Capri, by the easiest means possible.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy every minute of your trip.

Hi WFT,

As noted by O'reilly, you are covered by insurance. Have a driver pick ou up at the airport and take you to the nearest hydrofoil or ferry dock to Capri. This could be Naples or Sorrento.

Pompeii has been there since 76. It will be there on your next visit.

PS, make sure your insurance will cover the private car, since you have to take it since there are no train connections that will get you to Capri before the tour leaves, right?

We're waiting to hear from Globus now...
While we travel to Capri, our tour will be in Pompeii and then Sorrento before taking a hydrofoil to Capri. If we take a train to Naples, taxi to Molo Belvedere, and hydrofoil to Capri we nay just beat the tour to the hotel. Our flight lands in Rome FCO at about 7:30AM. How easy is it to hire a private car? I've seen some suggestions in the post I'm taking. Thank you, and please suggest anything else you know!

If you want to see Pompeii and your travel insurance will pay for a private car service I would meet the group in Pompeii. You arrive at 7:30am and will probably be able to leave the airport at 8:30am or maybe earlier if you aren't checking luggage. If you have a car service waiting in arrivals for you at 8:30 you should get to Pompeii about the time your group arrives. The tour group is leaving at 8am and since it's the first day someone will be late and the bus will leave late. Then they will make a pitstop on the Autostrada at Autogrill between Rome and Naples for 15-20 minutes. If you tell your driver you need to meet them at a certain time he will get you there on time. By this time the group will probably be eating lunch at one of the restaurants before entering Pompeii.

If you decide to so this I would get the cell # for your tour guide from Globus and have your driver call (he will have a cell) when you get to Pompeii and arrange to transfer your luggage to the bus and a meeting point. You can also check your luggage at Pompeii if your group is not stopping for lunch before entering the site and arrange a meeting point inside and pick up your luggage on the way out. Have your tour guide leave your tickets at the gate for you if you are going to meet them inside.

THANK YOU FODOR'S MEMBERS! We followed a lot of your advice. We caught the tour in Pompeii. After taking the express train to Termini st. in Rome, we took the 10:45 Eurostar to Naples and called our tour director. We had minutes to hop a train (6 minutes) to Pompeii. The bus picked us up from the train st. in Pompeii and we got to see the ruins for 35 min. The other couple who was delayed took a 130+ Euro cab drive from Naples to Sorrento to catch up. We did not sleep for 31+ hrs. but worth it! See www.lanesworld.net/italy for details, stories, pictures and Globus tidbits. Thank you again for everyone who shared advice!
