Travel Converter/Adapter-Krakow, Prague, Vienna & Budapest
 

Hi Everyone,

I leave for my overseas travels in a few weeks and just realize in my latest move that I discarded all of my electricity converters. I just want to confirm that I will only need one type before I make my purchase. Also, any that you recommend?

I am traveling to Krakow, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.

Rosie; You can buy a kit for not much money that will include perhaps 4/5 different types of converters.

Have a look at http://www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap11/converter.htm. First you need to look at your devices' electrical nameplates to see if they are already 220 volt acceptable or not.

The above link in spaarne's post is a very good reference, and worth reading carefully.

If your devices are compatible with European electricity, all you will need is an adapter plug, and there is no point in buying a universal kit if you just need an adapter for Schuko/euro plug sockets. I wouldn't pay more than a few dollars for a US to euro plug adapter.

The important thing is to know what electricity your devices use. Most, but not all, chargers for cameras, phones, tablets, etc are designed for travel, rated 100-240v 50/60Hz, and can be plugged directly into the wall with an adapter plug. If the device is 110v 60Hz only, I would leave it at home.

You should only neeed European two pin plug adaptors. Most electronics are now dual voltage not requiring a converter but check whatever you plan to take to make sure.

Other than a hair dryer or electric shaver, you will be fine with an adapter, NOT a converter.

Check your power sources for your electronics - they will likely be dual voltage (100-240V) and that means they work anywhere from Japan (100V) to the US (110V) to Europe and Australia (220V).

Better yet, ditch all the power sources you don't need and get one of the 5-in-one USB packs that plug directly into the wall (like these: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/bes...-wall-charger/) and just plug that into the adapter.

Cheapo-cheapo multi-converters may substitute a plastic insert instead of a metal connection to ground the plug. Yes, it may work -- until it doesn't.
